Play Based Learning
Technology - Collaborative
Technology - Independent
Traditional - Independent Traditional - Collaborative
• Blended Learning prepares students with the
technical skills essential in the current information
revolution while Inquiry Based Learning engages
students and allows them to explore and solve
authentic problems.
• Both models provide students with skills imperative
in the 21st century. In adopting a Virtual World
Pedagogy, Inquiry Based Learning can allow students
to independently explore chosen topics within the
parameters set by curricula.
A Combined Methodology
• Empower students and promote independence
• Improve student engagement and increase student
initiative
• Provide students with greater ownership over their
work
• Make learning more authentic and meaningful for
students
Benefits of technology supported inquiry based learning:

OUR LEARNING STORY
Recycling Center
How did the inquiry begin? What
happened during the inquiry?
During a shared reading of ‘Ne jette pas ca”, the students became interested in finding out
more about recycling. After discussing and sharing, we brainstormed a list of ways we could
reduce, re-use, and recycle. We then as a class researched more about the process of
recycling and what happens to the items we recycle.
After researching more about recycling facilities, students worked together to turn our play
corner into their very own recycling center. One group of students created a recycling truck
to collect the recycling. Another group created recycling bins to sort the recycling. Another
group created a paper and plastic sorting machine. Finally, students created caps for the
uniforms of the workers in the recycling center. As a class, we used our dictionaries to list
related vocabulary, which students can now apply in their play in the recycling center.
To further our learning, we went on a virtual tour of the Chicago Recycling Facility where we
learned about what happens to the items we recycle. To put to practice what we had learnt,
students created their own toys out of the recycled items we collected. We also created
posters and a collaborative book to share with others in the school about the importance of
recycling. Our inquiry unit is on going as students continue to play in their recycling center
and explore websites that allow them to virtually sort recycling

Editor's Notes

  • #19: Earlier in the year we had a speaker from the Canadian Civil Liberties Education Trust (CCLET) come and speak to the class about what it means to live in a democracy. This may seem like a topic too complex for a Grade 1 class. However, my students are able to vocalize what is fair and what is not and to take part democratic votes. Students have a voice in my classroom; they give input for everything from lesson planning to evaluations!
