What the Research Says
 Consistent student access to the technology, positive attitudes
towards the technology (by both teachers and students), and
teacher training in the technology led to the greatest student
achievement gains… Dale Mann, 1999

•Students in Technology rich environments showed increased
achievement in preschool through higher education for both
regular and special needs children…. Jay Sivin-Kachala,
1998.
Eighth-grade students who used simulation and higher order thinking
software showed gains in math scores of up to 15 weeks above grade level
as measured by NAEP… Harold Wenglinsky, 1998.
 Computer Supported Intentional Learning Environment students surpass
students in control classrooms on measures of depth of understating,
reflection, and also on standardized reading language, and vocabulary tests…

Editor's Notes

  • #4: Doug Johnson We use technology for a variety of applications. a) School/administrator/teacher efficiency- Using email, grading books, servers, data entry programs, projectors, and computers costs money too, but are not directly reflected in student grades. b) Automating instruction- using basic programs to ‘replace’ teaching is easier to assess direct impacts but provide only basic knowledge tools, no upper level thinking skills. For example, reading information and testing online. c)Information processing/productivity tool- Necessary to improve student efficiency (word, excel, etc.) but also have little direct effect on student grades.
  • #5: Cradler, et al It is very difficult for schools to find assessments that directly compare technology use to student achievement- how is this particular program directly affecting the student? It is not doing justice to only compare costs to overall test scores because of the various uses of technology within the districts.
  • #6: Cradler, et al Testing, survey, etc- There are many applications that all take funding to accomplish. A technology plan with measurable goals must be in place to make accurate assessments. (SIERTECH)
  • #7: Schacter, O’Hara/Pritchard Short term benefits- increased use of technology, increased standardized and national test scores, etc. Long term benefits- higher order thinking skills dramatically improved
  • #9: All articles Why current technology isn’t performing to potential- Programs need to be taught to the teachers and supported through administration in order to fully utilize them. This takes time and effort on the teachers part. Some teachers aren’t ready for full implementation as they are not tech savvy themselves. What else is needed to reach technology mastery in the school- continued support from the public and administration. Teachers need to continually improve technological skills, and schools need to continue to upgrade as information/programs become outdated.
