TYPES OF TENSES
INTRODUCTION
 The word tense is derived from
Latin word ‘Tempus’ which
means time.
 A verb indicates the time of an
action event or condition by
changing its forms.
THERE ARE TWELVE
POSSIBLE TENSES


Present Perfect

Tenses - Types of Tenses with Examples (Part Of Speech)
SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
 Simple present tense is used to describe an action,
an event or condition that is occurring in present at
the moment of speaking or writing.
 Formula
Subject (S) + Verb (V) + Object (O)
 EXAMPLES:
i. My friend helps me. (help)
ii. I sleep late on Sunday. (sleep)
Try to answer the following:
i. He __________ to beach every weekend. (go)
ii. They __________ to college daily. (go)
iii. Kids do not __________ the medicines. (like)
iv. Do you __________ some help? (need)
PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE
 The present continuous tense emphasizes the
continuing nature of an act, event or condition.
Formula:
Subject (S) + am/is/are + Verb (V1) + ing +
Object (O)
EXAMPLES:
i. I am riding a horse. (ride)
ii. You coming with us right now. (come)
Try to answer the following:
i. She ______ on the floor. (dance)
ii. Yes, Ram is _____ today’s event. (host)
iii. The Chief Minister is ______ the flag.(hoist)
iv. He is ______ his new business. (start)
PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
 The Present Perfect tense is used to describe action
that began in the past and continuous into the present
or has just been completed.
Formula:
Subject (S) + Have/Has + Verb(V3) +
Object (O)
EXAMPLES:
 I have visited Paris several times.
 She has studied Spanish for five years.
Try to answer the following:
 We _______ our homework. (Finish)
 They ______ that movie before.(See)
 He ______ in Bangkok since 2010.(Live)
 The company ________ its sales targets.(achieve)
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS
TENSE
 The present perfect continuous tense is used to
describe action, event or condition that has
begun in the past & continuous into the present.
Formula:
Subject (S) + Have/Has + been + Verb+ ing+
Object (O)
EXAMPLES:
 You have been telling a lie.
 He has been going to the morning walk.
Try to answer the following:
 She ______ a movie since morning. (Watch)
 John ______ for four hours.(Study)
 They ______ football.(Play)
 She _______ for the exam for three
months.( Prepare).

SIMPLE PAST TENSE:
 The Simple past is used to describe an action an
event, or condition that occurred in the past.
Formula:
Subject(S) + Verb(V2) + Object (O).
EXAMPLES:
 I went to the grocery store yesterday.
 She studied Spanish for three years in college.
Try to answer the following:
 They _____ soccer in the park last weekend.(Play)
 We______ our grandparents on the holidays.(Visit)
 She ______ all night at the party. (Dance)
 They ______ along the beach at sunset. (Walk)
PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
 The past continuous tense is used to described
actions ongoing in the past.
Formula:
Subject(S) + was/were + Verb+ ing + Object(O)
EXAMPLE:
 We were playing football after college.
 She was going to school.
Try to answer the following:
 Abhijit ______ tonight. (Come)
 We _____ to the market.(Go)
 They _____ a new car. (Buy)
 She _______ awesome. (Look)
PAST PERFECT TENSE
 The past perfect tense is used to refer to actions
that took place and were completed in the past.
Formula:
Subject(S) + had + Verb(V3) + Object(O)
EXAMPLE:
 We had played video games.
 He had beaten chess easily.
Try to answer the following:
 He _____ all the snacks. (Eat)
 She _____ me when I was a child.(Hurt)
 I _____ to school. (Go)
 Ram ______ the work. (Complete)
PAST PERFECT
CONTINUOUS
TENSE
 The past perfect continuous tense is used to
indicate that a continuing action in the past
began before another past action began or
interrupted the first action.
Formula:
Subject(S) + Had + been + Verb + ing+ Object
(O)
EXAMPLE:
 We had been playing video games for five hours.
 She had been cooking food for two years.
Try to answer the following:

referactions that will take place after the
act of speaking and writing.

EXAMPLE:
 I will close the window. It’s starting to rain.
 The farmer will grow cotton on a larger area of land.
Try to answer the following:
 It _______ in a moment. (rain)
 This hen _______ an egg daily. (lay)
 I _____ toys for my children tomorrow.(buy)
 He ______ a lie. (tell)
FUTURE CONTINUOUS TENSE
 The future continuous tense is used to
describe action ongoing in the future.
Formula:
Subject(S) + shall/will + be + Verb + ing +
Object(O)
EXAMPLE
 They will be cooking food at this time.
 I will be going to the office at 8am tomorrow.
Try to answer the following:

FUTURE PERFECT TENSE
 Future perfect tense is used to refer to an action
that will be completed sometime in the future
before another action takes place.
Formula:
Subject(S) + shall/will + have + Verb(v3) +
Object(O)
EXAMPLES:
 Boys will have played tennis by then.
 We will have written a letter.
Try to answer the following:

FUTURE PERFECT
CONTINUOUS TENSE
 The future perfect continuous tense is used to
indicate a continuing action that will be completed
at some specified time in the future.
Formula:
Subject(S) + shall/will + have + been + verb+ ing +
Object(O)
EXAMPLES:
 She will have been shopping for the whole day.
 I will have been starting my startup since 2021.
Try to answer the following:
