Tests, testing, and assessment are used to measure abilities, knowledge, and performance in language learning. There are several types of language tests that serve different purposes such as proficiency tests which measure overall language skills, placement tests which determine what level is appropriate for a student, and achievement tests which evaluate how much of a language has been learned. The results of diagnostic tests administered at the beginning of a course can identify strengths and weaknesses to address areas of difficulty.
