Editor's Notes

  • #2: Through the implementation of The Digital Storytelling Initiative , fourth grader students at Jane Ball Elementary will provide students with 21st Century literacy skills. As the name suggests, students will be producing digital stories to publish and present online, which provides students with much larger audience than the teacher. Essentially, students will be presenting their work to the world.
  • #3: With this Power Point presentation, you will be introduced to the basic components of my Digital Storytelling Grant.
  • #4: Jane Horton Ball Elementary School is requesting grant monies to fund The Digital Storytelling Initiative. We are located in Cedar Lake, Indiana, which is located in southern Lake County approximately 45 miles from Chicago, Illinois and 145 miles from Indianapolis.
  • #5: During 2008-2009 school year, Jane Ball’s 4th grade English/Language Arts scores dropped dramatically. This was the same year Indiana switched the ISTEP+ from the Fall to the Spring semester. For the 2008 fall test, students’ overall pass rate was 62%. Then, at end the year, 71% of students passed the English/Language Arts portion of the ISTEP+.
  • #6: Jane Ball is implementing the Fountas and Pinnell (2011) guided reading curricular framework, and we utilize the Fountas and Pinnell (2011) Benchmark Assessment System to determine the reading levels of each student three times per year. The Blue section with this chart represents the percentage of students who were at a level considered proficient for each grade level. Over 30% of the current fourth graders are reading below grade level. As you can see, fifth grade demonstrates an even greater need with nearly 60% of the students reading below grade level. These gaps must be closed in order for students to develop a strong literacy foundation
  • #7: The Digital Storytelling Initiative is a program designed to apply one-to-one computing and hands-on technology to enhance student’s digital literacy. The program will engage students in e-reading, e-writing, and video production to share their own stories, while using the iPad2 learning lab. In all, students will engage with digital literacies; involved in, digital reading, writing, podcasting, and video production.
  • #8: Here are some basic guidelines for digital storytelling. These follow the a preproduction, production, and presentation sequence to provide students with new technology opportunities.
  • #9: Here is a list of Digital Storytelling resources that my guide your own interest in pursuing a similar grant. On the other hand, digital storytelling may provide you with an engaging instructional strategy.
  • #10: Overall, there were 4 main objectives to guide the program. Increase english/language arts test scoresImprove student literacy skillsProvide students with 21st century learning tools like the iPad2
  • #11: Jane Ball is asking for $41,468.00 from the Comcast Foundation. About 31,000 is providing the Apple hardware and miscellaneous tech-geared items. Then, around 22% of the budget was used to provide the involved teachers with professional development. Apple consultants are being used to train the teachers regarding handling the machines, and Bernajean Porter is the digital storytelling consult being used for the training process.
  • #12: $41,468.00 seems like a lot of money, but Jane Ball is receiving these items listed. The iPad 2 Learning Lab is a portable cart filled with 30 iPads. When needed, the MacBook Pro’s will be used for final production of student stories, but mostly these will be utilized by the involved teachers to manage the project, their blog space and the required applications.
  • #13: The Comcast Foundation is being pursued because they have the required money to support digital literacy. In 2009, they funded programs with as much as $300,000. This was on multiple occasions. Additionally, they fund projects with a focus on Digital Literacy. As a result, The Digital Literacy Initiative will appeal to them financially and educationally.
  • #14: The effectiveness of the project will be evaluated with several tools. First, students will be given the ISTEP+ in April and May. 4% growth is our goal. Second, Teachers, parents, and learners will be surveyed twice (once in August and June) to gauge the success of the iPad technology within the curriculum. Third, The Jane Ball staff will administer Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) in October and MayFourth, Students will be tested three times per year in September, January, and May with the Fountas and Pinnell (2011) Benchmark Assessment System II.Lastly, many student projects will be posted online through our school website and our individual teacher blog space. So, the virtually the students are presented their work to the world.
  • #15: In summation, The Digital Storytelling Initiative will engage digital natives with various forms of electronic literacy. At the same time, students will be acquiring 21st Century Skills for the job market after their 2020 graduation date.
