The Elementary Particles
Abstract
The naturally occurring patterns created through different matter retains
a certain order in both directions. Zooming in and out allow you to see the
microscopic structures that make up all organic life, but then relate to similar
structures on the human scale and beyond. Under the microscope, the world
that is inhabited by cellular lifeforms is very precise, every piece of the
puzzle fits perfectly into eacother. Science has made many ways to explain
and visualize structures in the nanoscale as well. The study of these patterns
in our world is one of the reasons why we have mathematics. What can we
learn about the different sensory relationships when we scale these patterns
in a synesthetic way?
Concept
My primary intent for this piece is to create a relationship through physical
exploration of the space that is set for us, how that affects our awareness of
ourselves and especially to others. It is a subtle play that evolves through the
experience and is all based on the spaces in between. On a normal, human
scale, we look at two objects and make many observations about them, their
size, weight, location in space and so on. However when we get down to the
subatomic level, the continual division of particles reveals that nothing is made
out of one thing, but many pieces, and there is empty space, a lot of it. The way
I tried to translate that was to create an experience that got across this simple
idea, apart we can only see differences, but once we come together then we
dissolve borders and all parts of a whole navigating through empty space.
Powers of Ten
Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe.
Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only a s a speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth
with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Our journey ends inside a
proton of a carbon atom within a DNA molecule in a white blood cell. POWERS OF TEN © 1977 EAMES OFFICE LLC (Available at www.eamesoffice.com)
The Scale of the Universe
Zoom from the edge of the universe to the quantum foam of spacetime and learn the scale of things along
the way! Learn the size of the Pillars of Creation and marvel at the minuscule scale of a neutrino!
Empty Space
Through the study of quantum theory and chemistry, I’ve been aware of the paradoxical nature of matter
and always wanted to bring that experience to others.
The Elementary Particles
Experiencing our perception of physical reality and the awareness of that to ourselves and others.

Conclusion
Biomimicry in a variety of forms, by learning from nature there is the
possibility of creating a sensory experience, some in the visual sphere and
others in a combination of ways. Using the forms of nature and transposing
them is something that man has already learned how to do very well, it is
called domestication. I’m not trying to domesticate nature, but using its
knowledge in order to create something interesting.
