Story- 2
There was once a farmer named Hari.
In his field, there was an old apple tree.
It was so old that it had stopped
bearing fruits. One day the farmer said
to himself, ‘This tree bear no fruits. It
only gives shelter to the sparrows, the
grasshoppers and the squirrels in the
neighbourhood. I must cut it down. The
wood is still strong. I can get some
furniture made.’
The next day, Hari got a sharp axe and
went out to cut the tree. He was just
about to strike at the roots of the tree
when he heard a muffled voice.
Hari looked around, but he saw no one.
Again he picked his axe and was about
to strike the tree, when he heard a
voice, ‘Please, sir , don’t cut the tree.’
He looked down and saw that the
grasshopper, the sparrow and the
squirrel had all come out of their
homes and were standing around him.
‘Please sir,’ they begged , ‘spare the life
of this tree. It is our only home.’
Hari was surprised. He said, ‘The tree is
useless. It bears no fruit. I need
furniture. So I shall surely cut it and use
the wood.’
‘We promise to sing to you in the
afternoons when you are tired. You will
feel happy and refreshed, ‘said the
creatures.
‘No, no,’ said Hari. ‘Go find another
tree. I cannot spare this tree.’
Hari prepared to chop down the tree.
The animals began to weep, but Hari
was in a hurry to finish chopping the
tree by afternoon.
He wanted to send the wood to a
carpenter so that he could make
furniture out of it.
He had struck the tree only a couple of
times with his axe when he suddenly
saw something in the hollow of the
tree. It was a beehive. Hari looked
carefully. The beehive was full of honey.
He tasted the honey. It is delicious! Hari
said to himself.
Hari put his axe and sat down. The
tree,’ he said, ‘is very useful. In its
hollow , it has made place for a
beehive, which is the bees’ home. If I
take away the honey now, the bees will
make more. They will not leave their
home and go away.’ Hari got up and
called the grasshopper, the sparrow
and the squirrel.
‘Hey, come here, all of you! I’m sparing
the life of this tree. You can live in
peace now.’ Hari threw away the axe.
The creatures thanked Hari for sparing
the tree. It was their home.
The sparrow, the grasshopper and the
squirrel were happy. Hari learnt an
important lesson that day- everything
in this world has some use. The tree
also had a reason to be still standing.
Will surely come back with a new story.
