What are the principles of visual design?
Visual Design Principles. The elements of visual design — line, shape, negative/white space,
volume, value, colour and texture — describe the building blocks of a product's aesthetics. On
the other hand, the principles of design tell us how these elements can and should go together
for the best results.
1.Unity and Variety
“To achieve visual unity is the main goal of graphic design. When all elements are in
agreement, a design is considered unified.” Alex White (The Elements of Graphic Design)
● It is a strong way to bring a brand concept to life.
● Unity is a force operating within a design that gives it the appearance of oneness or
resolution.
● Create unity by including similar features in each of your design elements or by
selecting a uniting feature, like color or size.
● Engaging designs find a balance between unity and variety to create a cohesive whole while
creating visual interest.
1.1 Unity and Variety
2. Balance
● Objects in design carry weight just like in the physical world, but it’s called visual
weight. The visual weight of a design needs to have balance.
● Balance can be implied by size, shape, or even contrast.
● It can utilize symmetry or equality, balance can also be achieved through asymmetry.
3.Hierarchy
● Hierarchy is the difference in significance
between elements of your design. Some
elements are more critical to the overall
message of your visual than others,
establishing a hierarchy that you can
keep in mind when designing how much
space each element takes up or how
much attention it draws. Items near the
top, large in size, or a contrasting and
noticeable color are typically at the top of
the hierarchy. When designing the less
essential elements, you can keep the
hierarchy in mind, so you don't pull the
audience's focus on less important
elements.
3.1 Hierarchy
4.Contrast
● The difference between two or
more objects in a design is
referred to as contrast.
● The difference in objects could
be light and dark, thin and thick,
small and large, bright and dull,
etc.
● Contrast is most commonly
associated with readability,
legibility, and accessibility.
4.1 Contrast
What kind of contrast method did they use?
5.Scale
● Scale is the sizing of elements or a standard of measurement.
● It can be used in combination with other principles like emphasis to draw the viewer into a
focal point, and helps us make sense of designs or imagery.
● A scale can help you measure each element against the other elements to ensure that each
element has a corresponding element of equal or comparable size.
6.Dominance
● Dominance is when one
element is more significant or
draws more attention than other
elements. You can use
dominance to direct attention to
the important aspects of your
design. You can use contrast
and scaling to create
dominance. However, you can
also use balance and unity to
make sure your dominating
elements don't overwhelm the
other elements of your project.
7.Project Brief
Use the principles of visual design were you have learned, re-design the object below.
