The left side of the brain controls the right side of your body and the right side of your brain control the left side of your body. When a split brain patient was shown an image in the left visual field they could not name the object because the center of speech is located in the left hemisphere of the brain, so the patient with the split brain saw the objects with the right side of their brain therefore could not say they saw the object because the left hemisphere was not in use. So during the visual ability test the patient saw the object but could not say they saw it because of the speech hemisphere was on the opposite side. When the patients were asked to point to the lights that were flashing they indeed could complete this task because they weren’t being asked to speak just point, this shows the left hemisphere in the brain controls speech and indeed the patients saw the lights but could not say they did.
Some difficulties the split brain operation causes is that the two hemispheres of the brain are not connected and aspects are processed separately but some people say that if a person has split brain that they can cognitively perform two tasks at the same time as well as a regular brained person can perform one. According to our text book, “Your left brain is “better” at speaking, writing, mathematical calculation, and reading, and it is the primary center for language. Your right hemisphere, however, possesses superior capabilities for recognizing faces, solving problems involving spatial relationships, symbolic reasoning, and artistic activities” (Gerrig and Zimbardo, 2009).
Because this study helped figure out why people act the way they do when they have a split brain and it helped future studies and psychologist more understand how this concept works I do believe that this research was ethical. As long as the patients agreed to take the tests and their reactions being analyzed and recorded this method was perfectly fine and in all circumstances will help future studies and future researchers.
References:
Gerrig, R.J. and Zimbardo, P.G.
