The Straddling Bus is an alternative transportation method presented in China that can straddle above traffic to reduce jams by 20-30% and lower CO2 emissions. It carries up to 1,400 passengers across wagons holding 300 people each. Powered by electricity and solar energy, the 4.5m tall and 6m wide vehicle moves on rails on both sides of the street at speeds up to 60 km/h. Beijing plans to implement the Straddling Bus in the Mentougou District along 186km of track, making it more sustainable and faster to implement than subways.
