The structure and function of the nucleus. The Nucleus
Where is the nucleus found? The nucleus is found within the structure of cells in both plants and animals. In several ways it can be classified as the cell's brain or central processing unit. It contains all the genetic material necessary for the cell to function. It forms the central part within eukaryotic cells and holds the threads of DNA. The movement, entry and exit, of molecules from and to the nucleus occur through a number of pores that it contains.
The nucleus structureThe Nucleolus - The nucleolus is a membrane-less organelle within the nucleus that manufactures ribosomes, the cell's protein-producing structures. The Nuclear Envelope - The nuclear envelope is a double-layered membrane that encloses the contents of the nucleus during most of the cell's lifecycle.Nuclear Pores - The nuclear envelope is perforated with holes called nuclear pores. These pores regulate the passage of molecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm, permitting some to pass through the membrane, but not others.Ribosomes - A minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins, found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells. They bind messenger RNA and transfer RNA to synthesize polypeptides and proteinsEndoplasmic Reticulum - A network of membranes within the cytoplasm of cells, where proteins and lipids are synthesized.Nucleoplasm - Nucleoplasm, also called nuclear sap or karyoplasm, is the fluid usually found in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. This fluid contains primarily water, dissolved ions, and a complex mixture of molecules. Its primary function is to act as a suspension medium for the organelles of the nucleus.
