DESIGN BRIEF: How might I use
technology to encourage regular reflection
and presence?
GOALS: Prompt daily reflection and
celebration. Resurface the past easily.
Create a joyful experience to encourage
use. Enable the user to control their own
information.
CONCEPT: A prototype chat bot that
prompts users with different questions
daily through text messaging. Concept
and keyword analysis is used to find
related content (animated gifs) and entries
are texted to the user in the future.

TIL.LY FRAMEWORK
video demo: vimeo.com/166473017
presentation (long): vimeo.com/166993009
“People don’t want to wait, and
they don’t want to think, and the
internet should respond to that.”

-Evan Williams, cofounder Twitter
1. RESEARCH: MARKET RESEARCH
SURVEYS (30 respondents)
• How frequently do you write about your
thoughts or ideas?

• How important is regular journaling to you?

• How often do you go through old entries?

• Description (concise v. verbose, organized vs
messy, etc.)

• Why did you start journaling?

• What do you most and least like about the
your journal and journaling routine? What
feelings and thoughts come to mind?
1. RESEARCH: USER HABITS
INTERVIEWS (7 interviewees)
• Walk me through your journaling process

• Are there subjects do you typically write
about?

• Is there a time of the day or week that you
prefer to write?

• Where do you typically write?

• How long have you been journaling for?

• What do you think keeps you coming back?

• Do you gain anything out of reviewing past
entries?
QUOTES
• “Am I getting blase in my old age? Is life just
passing me by?”

• “I wish I had more time for it. I like the
opportunity to focus on what's most
important to me “

• “I feel calm after writing, feel like I have a
better sense of perspective after looking back
on initial reactions. It’s cathartic and helps me
cope.”

• “I forget things and I want to have a record of
the important things from my 20's.”
SUMMARY
POSITIVE:
• It’s a personal, private, meditative activity.

• It’s rewarding to see personal progress, but
the past isn’t reviewed that often.

NEGATIVE:
• Paper and pen and past records aren’t
accessible.

• People dislike “falling behind” or forgetting to
journal and would want to do it more regularly

• The disjointedness of multiple physical
journals.
SUMMARY
OBSERVATIONS:
• Pen and paper was the most popular, but it’s
supplemented with a variety of digital tools.

• Escape and refuge from social media and
public expression.

• The feedback loop between writing, which
doesn’t always feel rewarding, is driven by the
ability to review the past and see progression.
III. RESEARCH

"We don’t choose between
experiences, we choose
between memories of
experiences."

-Daniel Kahneman,
Psychologist
ON REFLECTION
1. RESEARCH: PSYCHOLOGY
Documentation of the everyday might
seem trivial, but provides unexpected
happiness because over time, we can
come to see the ordinary past as
extraordinary.
-A “Present” For The Future, Harvard
Business School
THE EVERYDAY PAST
DIGITAL DIARIES
1. RESEARCH: COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
• Many broad journaling apps
• Social (default to public, or use public
data)
• Prompt-driven facilitation of ritual
writing or reflection
• Exporting data has varying degrees
of difficulty
• Variable prompts promote different
thinking
TRENDS
1. Prompt daily reflection & celebration.

2. Resurface the past easily.

3. Joyful experience to encourage my
use.

4. My information is my own.
DESIGN PRINCIPLES
3. REQUIREMENTS DEFINITION
5. PROTOTYPE v0
V1
5. PROTOTYPE v1
5. PROTOTYPE v1
5. PROTOTYPE v1
• Reminders to record in email get lost.

• People don’t make entries every day.

• Gifs are enjoyable, but can be
distracting when adding an entry.

• Relationship between gifs and entries
not always clear or accurate.

• People liked being prompted at the end
of the day.

CONCLUSIONS
Technology: Bootstrap / jQuery / Slack / Twilio /
Giphy / Alchemy / Mongo DB / Node.js
(Express.js)

Research: Reclaiming Conversation (Sherry
Turkle), Presence (Amy Cuddy), Deep Focus (Cal
Newport), The Healing Power of Writing (Susan
Borkin), Meditation Apps, Sensory Deprivation
Tanks, 30 questionnaires, 7 interviews

Process: 3 prototypes, 160+ personal notes of
the everyday
• Packaging code for self-hosted
installation and further user testing.

• Develop architecture for time and
use analysis to create responsive
interactions.

• Physical digital bulletin board.

• Exploring different representations
of the data.
