INDUCTIVE AND DEDUCTIVE METHOD OF
TEACHING
INTRODUCTION
Deductive teaching begins with a general rule of
theory presented by the instructor, followed by
specific examples and practice problems. Inductive
teaching begins with specific examples presented by
the instructor and requires students to make
observations to formulate a general rule or theory.
INDUCTIVE METHOD
Inductive instruction makes use of student “noticing”.
Instead of explaining a given concept and following this
explanation with examples , the teacher presents students
with many examples, the teacher presents students with
many examples showing how the concept is used. The
intent is for students to “notice”, by way of the examples,
how the concept works.
The inductive method is less-teacher directed. It
begins with specific details , concrete data and examples
and ends with generalization rule or principle.
EXAMPLES
❖ Statements/observations: Mercury is a planet that
revolves around the sun.
❖ Venus is a planet that revolves around the sun.
❖ Earth is a planet that revolves around the sun.
❖ Mars is a planet that revolves around the sun.
❖ Conclusion or generalization: Therefore all planets
revolves around the sun.
ADVANTAHES
 The learners are more engaged in the teaching-learning process .
With our facilitating skills, the. Learners formulate the
generalization or rule.
 Learning becomes more interesting at the outset because we begins
with the experience of our students. We begin with what they
know.
 It helps the developed of our learners higher-order-thinking-
skills(HOTS).
 Meaningful, memorable and lesson.
 Students discover themselves.
 Active and interesting lesson-students are actively involved in
learning.
DISADVANTAGS
 Time-taking
 Sometimes can frustrate students who would perfect simply to be
told the rule.
 Learning styles/inability to discover themselves.
 Students may reach false conclusions on grammar rules.
 Place heavy demands on teachers in planning a lesson.
 Need to select and organize the data carefully.
 It requires more time and so less subject matter will be covetred.
We need much to lead our students to the formulation of
generalization.
DEDUCTIVE METHOD
A deductive approach to instruction is a more teacher-centered approach.
This means that the teacher gives the students a new concept, explains it, and
then has the students practice using the concept. For example, when teaching a
new scientific concept, the teacher will introduce the concept, explain the rules
related to its use, and finally the students will practice using the concept in a
variety of different ways.
The deductive approach is teacher-dominated. It begins with abstract rule,
generalization, principle and ends with specific examples, and concrete details.
EXAMPLES:
• All planets revolve around the sun.
• Earth is a planet.
• Therefore it revolves around the sun.
ADVANTAGES
 Time saving.
 Coverage of a wider scope of subject matter.
 No bother on the part of the teacher to lead learners to the
formulation of generalization or rule.
 Lesson is straight to the point.
 Many rules can be more explicitly and quickly explained.
 Allow more time for practice and application.
DISADVANTAGES
 It is not supportive of the principle that learning is an active
process. There is less involvement on the part of the learners.
 Lesson appears uninteresting at first. We begins our lesson with the
abstract, with the learners do not know so at the outset our lesson
will look irrelevant and uninteresting.
 Quite formal.
 Encourages the belief that learning a language is simply a case of
knowing the rule.
 Passive and boring lesson.
 Teacher-centered.
CONCLUSION
The inductive method emphasizes discovery and leads
students from specific observations to general theories. It’s
a bottom-up approach that encourages active exploration
and critical thinking. Deductive teaching, on the other hand,
presents broad rules first, and then applies them to specific
examples.
