Should graffiti be banned and graffiti artists be prosecuted? This and a variety of related questions
have been increasingly perplexing society as a result of the popularization of graffiti, starting with
dissemination of its works in New York City in the early 1980s (346). Since then, graffiti artists
have both been banned and cherished, deprived of their work and allowed in art galleries. Thus,
another question has been raised: Should graffiti be considered art or a form of communication with
aesthetics on a background? This question is addressed in the essay, "Revolution in a Can," written
by Blake Gopnik and first published in the November 2011 edition of Foreign Policy (345). In the
essay, Gopnik presents an argument that essentially divides the world of graffiti in two spheres:
Western and non–Western. In the former, graffiti has gone from being a means of speaking against
prevailing inequalities to "[saddling] with the oldest high–culture clichés" associated with art (346).
While in the latter, graffiti is used to communicate ideas and to "[speak] truth to power" (346).
Ultimately, what is at stake here is how do we accept and identify new forms of self–expression

Analysis Of The Arrow And The Song
"The Arrow and the Song" is a relatively short, yet complex poem that takes some deep thinking to
pull apart. The narrator shoots an arrow into the air, yet cannot follow it, for it soared across the sky,
far into the unknown. The narrator also lets a song be heard to the world, also unable to follow this,
because of course, you cannot see words with your eyes. After much time, he or she finds both
unbroken, the arrow in an oak tree, and the song within a heart of a friend. However, the meaning of
the poem runs much deeper than a simplistic story of someone shooting an arrow and letting loose a
song, unable to find them until years later. The poem, upon being looked into, is actually a lesson
that warns the reader to be wary of what they say, for we are unable to know of where the things we
say will end up, or their effect. The theme is heavily pushed by repetition, along with a cleverly
thought out use of words and symbolism, both fall into place nicely with the metaphors used. Once
you dig into the poem on a search for the true meaning, it becomes rather obvious and clear. As
previously stated, the theme of "The Arrow and the Song" is a short tale cautioning us to be careful
of what we say and do, for all of our actions and words leave impacts on the world, impacts that we
would have never expected, these effects can last forever, and it is up to us to decide how we want

was once held by an original work of art has been lost through the mass reproduction of these works
that has occurred in recent years. He writes of an entirely bogus religiosity (116–117) that surrounds

The J. Paul Getty Museum
For this essay, we were required to go to the Getty Villa in Malibu and look for specific works of art
in the J. Paul Getty Museum. The Getty Villa is on a hill adjacent to Malibu beach and requires a
reservation to get inside. They do not allow pedestrian entrances, so I had to take public
transportation and show proof of my Metro bus receipt to get in. Once inside, I took a shuttle up a
curvy hill to the actual museum. When I got to the actual entrance, I was taken aback by how
beautiful not only the view was, but the Villa was as well. It did not take me long to find the five
artworks. The first work of art we were required to look at was a grave stele. There were a collection
of them against a wall on the second floor of the Getty Villa. The one that stuck out the most to me
was titled Grave Stele of Herophanta and Posideos which was dated around 150 B.C. It is a Greek
grave stele that was made in Smyrna, which is what we today call Turkey. The stele was around 4
feet tall and made out of marble. The back of the stele was not viewable, but the front had a lot of
detail. On the front at the top displays what resembles a triangular pediment typically seen in Greek
temples. Underneath that are two wreath–like objects. In the center, there is a portrait that shows a
family consisting of a husband and wife with two children. The woman is holding a wreath and the
two kids are crowded around the father. Each member of the family is wearing stylized drapery.

Visit The Leepa Rattner Museum
For my museum trip I chose to visit the Leepa–Rattner museum in Tarpon Springs. I have never
been to an art museum before so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. With that being said, I must
admit I really found enjoyment from the distinctive emphasis that artists put within many of these
images. Furthermore, it is truly amazing how you can gaze at a work of art and begin to establish an
idea of the narrative being told within the image. The Leepa–Rattner museum is not very large, and
it did not take very long to view everything that was on display. But to a great degree, I was
fascinated with the workmanship and focus of many of the paintings. The museum was very
beautiful, and the architecture was very well done as well. The building presents an image of a ship
at sea. Additionally, I really valued the size of the museum, which is not huge, yet rather more
personal and relaxed. I found a few of the works strong and persuasive, and the more diminutive
size keeps things in perspective.
The first painting that really drew my attention was the full sized image by Picasso called Guernica.
The proportion and balance of the painting is astounding. The scene portrayed in Guernica is a room
filled with moving, shouting and anguished adults, and creatures. Also, I was told by someone at the
museum one of the more fascinating parts of the piece, and that is that it is done in monochrome.

For project two I decided to attend the Norton Simon Museum. Some time ago I had seen a friend
share several pictures through social media, it consisted of a beautiful garden and distinct art work.
After going back and forth in conversation she informed me it was a museum located in Pasadena.
At the time I never took the initiative to go despite how intrigued I was through simple pictures
however, I moved from Pomona to Pasadena and decided since we had the project coming up it was
the perfect occasion to attend. My decision to attended was driven by curiosity of what my city has
to offer. In a school field trip, I had the opportunity to attend the Getty Center although it was so
long ago that I cannot remember much. I do not have any expectations since I really do not have
anything to compare it with, however I do expect to hopefully be able to identify genres of art and
maybe even classify around what periods the art belongs to.
The piece of art work in front of me is very similar yet all the same distinct from what I have seen in
class. It seems like an ethnic girl or women is kneeling giving her back to the audience holding a
bouquet of lilies in what looks like is a field. I decided to discuss this piece because I was drawn to
it. I saw several works of art that drew my attention, but none like this one. I like that in a sense I

The forest of Quedayla, is located next to the swamp. The swamp is where the terrifying monsters,
by the fairies standards, are banished, where they will never have peace, while being on high alert
for the dangerous swamp creatures that lurk among them. One of the monsters in the swamp is
Fowley the witch, how is particularly more enraged at the fairy's than others, for banishing her to the
dark depths of the swamp. So, she devised a plan to turn their beautiful home into a place to fear,
just like they did to her. After, weeks of work Fowley made a tar like substance, that would turn all
the plant matter in its path to dead remains. Under the cloak of night, she snuck to the outskirts of

time to fix it, because there are fairy guards patrolling the border of the fairy village, to ensure

Taking a Look at the Quercus Alba
The Quercus Alba or commonly known as the white oak tree is a hardwood tree that is found in
many areas around North America. The wood from this tree has been a very good building material
and is used in projects from house building to small wood carpentry projects. Quercus Alba is a very

Experience from CRC Art Gallery This is the first time I have been in Crc Art Gallery, it is really
interesting to be there for working. I have been there for three times, but I feel I have learned and
gained a lot experience for being employee at Crc Art Gallery. When I was working there, I just
realized there only show ceramic arts and only one bronze. There are include the work of arts by
four artists: Bill Abright, Lisa Reinertson, Richard Shaw, Claudia Tarantino. Each artist has a

I have thought most of the viewers come to Crc Art Gallery just are only Crc students. But all the
viewers come there are include middle school students, high school students, elder people, etc.
Some young people go around and take a quick look for all the art, sometimes they take a picture of
sculpture. A few people they ask for some question about work of art. Most of elder people take
slowly and carefully look for the works, sometime they stand in front of these art for a while. There
was an interesting scene when I worked at Gallery on the first day. There is a middle school girl who
is deaf, and her teacher use sign language to communicate with her. At that time, I did not pay
attention to the girl much because I think it is really normal conversation with a deaf person.
Suddenly, I saw she speak up for question about one sculpture of Richard Shaw. I look at my
coworker with big open eyes, and I told her this is the first time I saw a deaf person who able to talk.
On the second day at work, there was a guy who came in the Gallery for quick around look for all
the works of art, after that he asked me for taking picture of all sculptures in Gallery. But for 15, 20
minutes later, he was still seating on the back of Gallery. I felt weir and a lot of thought come to my

What Makes Art Art?
Art is an object or piece of work that brings one pleasure. Art is also something you see or feel and
you cannot even begin to describe the ways you like it or how it makes you feel. Art is something
that portrays beauty and happiness. Art lets you see the world through another person's perspective.
Most art seems to tell a story about where a person has been and the things they have encountered
along the way. It lets you connect with the artist and see things through their eyes. Art is a way of

The scene has two snowmen at the entrance to the covered bridge. It fills your heart with warmth
and holiday spirit just to look at it.
Portraits to me are art in a different sense. Some of my favorite portraits are by Martin Waugh. It is
what he calls Liquid Sculpture. He uses high speed photography to capture drops of liquid as the
splash into lakes and other bodies of water. To me there is just something so soothing about his
work. It is amazing how a tiny drop of liquid can create such a beautiful work of art. His work
impresses me, because I never really thought of liquid as art before I saw one of his photos.
The formal qualities of art work are somewhat important. I like paintings that flow smoothly with
very fine brush strokes. I think some of the most beautiful art work is produced with a combination
of canvas and oil paints. I like portraits that capture images I normally could not see otherwise.
Portraits that capture the colors you can see when light reflects on a ripple of water amaze me. I do

The Museum of Contemporary Art currently has two exhibitions on view; one is called "Dirge:
Reflections on [Life and] Death," and the other is "Sara VanDerBeek." One work of art that stood
out the most to me was Epitaph from 2011 by Pedro Reyes. Reyes works are often meant to
physically engage his viewers in order to shift their social and emotional expectations. The Epitaph
invites his viewers to imagine a future in which they no longer exist, and then create a short message

This work of art is considered to be a performative installation, and it is created with materials such
as paper, two steel typesets, two hammers, and instructions. The two typesets are placed on a carpet
on the ground where you create your own epitaph. The instructions for this work are: Take a few
minutes to compose the words for which you will be remembered and write a draft. Once you have
completed your draft choose two cards for your epitaph and place them on top of each other. Gently
pick up the letters of the metal stamps and hammer your epitaph letter by letter. Once you have
completed your lettering, you may place your epitaph in the "cemetery." Keep the second copy for
yourself. When viewing this work from left to right the first thing I noticed was the description of
the work of art I was viewing. Next to the description are the instructions, which are stacked and
labeled with the numbers 1–5. Then directly below the instructions is a table that holds the materials
to complete an epitaph; these materials consist of paper, pencils, and clips. Next, moving past the
table to the right, there are seven rows of thin white wires, which are placed into the wall. Then
clipped onto the wires are epitaphs, which are spread out from left to right. Finally, below the
epitaphs on a black carpet you have two steel typesets and two hammers to create an epitaph. One of

The look of the tree is compared to the old man by the use of personification. Although the man
knew that the tree had to be much stronger because if the man took the trees place he wouldnít be
able to stand alone. In lines seven and eight Whitman expresses some confusables as he has the man

Public Art : Chicago Is A Hub For A Booming Culture Of Art
Public art encapsulates a large part of Chicago's history, and engages many different people in
varying ways. Recently, I was in the city observing art and came across a woman who was seeing
the same pieces I was. She proceeded to tell me she had just gotten off a plane, that morning, from
New York, keep in mind it was around noon when I saw her, and wanted to show her daughter the
great pieces of public art in Chicago. She passionately relayed the rich historical context of a few
works of art: her main point being that Chicago is a hub for a booming culture of art. She noted that
great artists from Europe, such as Picasso, Chagall, and Dubuffet, wanted to be a part of the modern
art trends happening in Chicago in the twentieth century. She went as far to say that "these [pieces of
artwork] are unique in the world," meaning they are so well known and respected that their
popularity extends beyond the city of Chicago. It is curious to think about what makes a successful
work of public art, and why artists and observers alike are so intrigued with the art in Chicago. In

NF's song Motivated (NF). NF is arguing that as an artist, he is the strongest critic of his music.
Author, Anne Bradstreet, is also a harsh critic of her work. In fact, Bradstreet writes a poem, "The
Author to Her Book", illustrating the process of artistic self–criticism. We can recognize that artists
are often the harshest critics for their works, however, used correctly, this continuous artistic self–
criticism creates a beautiful work of art. Artistic self–criticism is a process, the steps of which are
illustrated in "The Author to Her Book". The first step in artistic self–criticism is creation. Before
the criticism can begin their needs to be a work to edit. The initial work can be a rough draft, sketch,
outline or just a starting idea. This is not the work artists present to others, as Bradstreet illustrates

principles in a way that is beneficial to the community around it as it guides their understanding and

Because Heidegger does not agree with the creations of modern times, he does not agree with the

1. I disagree with the authors' definition for work of art. The author states that their thought on work
of art has to be something made by a person. Nature such as trees and insects are not works of art. I
personally hold more of vague and open opinion on my definition for work of art. I feel like nature
and even the uncontrolled movements caused by non human are considered as art. My definition of
work of art would be something that can be seen or thought visually by human beings. I would
include everyday objects including water bottles and cell phone with my own inspirations applied

Luis Jimenez's piece titled El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd) from the Winthrop Rockefeller
Gallery represents the react against the seminal post–war American movement. The works of art
were chosen by a Contemporary and Modern collection created during the past century. The
commonality amongst the works of art that lead to them being displayed together was the abstract
expressionism; all the paintings reacted against the seminal post–war American movement. This
piece was made in 1998 as a depiction of the murder of Esequiel of Redford, Texas while he tended
his goats. The piece's present location is the Arkansas Arts Center, and its original location is the
Lawrence Lithography Workshop in Saint Louis, Missouri. The piece is water color and crayon on
paper, and it can only be seen from one side by looking up because it is hanging on the wall. The
subject of the work of art by Jiménez is a young man tending his goats who was shot by assassins
because they thought he was a drug smuggler. This work of art was made in 1998 in Saint Louis,
Missouri for Esequiel Hernandez. This painting was not a copy, it was originally made. The art was
made after similar works. The technique used was lithograph (water color) and crayon on paper. The

Free Art The First Amendment speaks on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and
petition; so important, they found their place in the US Constitution. Even with these freedoms
meaning so much to the majority of America, somehow today we still encounter differences in
political and religious views that seem to provoke people to act violently against a piece of art or
even physically against the artist that created it such as in the recent case of artist Illma Gore. Often
the violent action of destroying a work of art is "more offensive" than the image itself. We should
allow artists free reign of subject matter as well as style and work together to prevent art desecration
and violence through education of the arts. Censorship is the result of the fear of art. When the fear
of art turns into iconoclasm or, rejection of a valued belief system, that fear becomes lack of
government funding, desecration, and physical violence.
Visual artists fell through the gaps and did not receive federal support for their work until the
creation of the NEA or National Endowment for the Arts in 1965. This federal program had little
funding but proved a growing interest in art and art viewing from the public. This demand for art
creates a demand for funds to support venues and museums so they can keep their doors open. A
problem with the NEA is that they provide government funding, which prevents them from being
biased about

Muertos altar and about Ms. Chavez.One important item that goes into an altar are marigolds.
Marigolds are yellow– orange flowers, these flowers are also called cempasúchitl. They symbolize

Giorgio De Chirico's Art
Giorgio De Chirico's art can be viewed one that evolved tremendously over time. However, his
artwork portrayed a number of characteristics and traits that differentiated them from the works of
other artists in his time. This is probably why his art remains a puzzling factor to many from the
20th Century to date. A wide use themes and concepts can be seen in a number of his works. He has
played a huge role in shaping the surrealist works of art.
As mentioned, Giorgio De Chirico's art differed immensely from those of artists at the time. As a
result of this difference, he appeared to be left out and his work segregated especially by the French
arts men and fellow surrealists. His art was characterized by symbolic objects. His manikins, for
example were spotted without upper body parts or faces. They appeared bizarre. Mostly, his
paintings comprised of natural inspirations. Even if he painted a building, the aspect of nature was
seen in the outcome. Additionally, he used color so as to put emphasis of particular objects. He
would use contrasting colors in his mannequins and would place them in odd sizes and relationships
so as to create juxtaposition. An example of this can be seen in The Disquieting Muses, one of his
works of art.

My Personal Essay: Like An Oak Tree
Like an Oak tree.
An oak tree is my personal mascot because it has an amazing life cycle. It starts as a tiny acorn and
grows to be a tall and mighty Oak whose trunk is resistant to disease and harsh weather.
At the age of eight, I thought less of myself. I felt inferior since I only knew so much. All I ever
worried about was how much bread my father brought to our rented house before I slept. Eating was
the order of the day, it was rather a goal I pledged to accomplish on a daily basis.
Besides eating, I was also passionate about animated movies ranging from Tom and Jerry to Shrek.
There was always a message conveyed in each movie I watched. My favorite was Chicken Little, a
story of a chick who saved his town from alien invasion. Chicken Little had once thrown his town
into panic claiming that the sky was falling. Everyone in the city thought he was crazy as they
assumed that he reacted to an acorn that fell on his head. Chicken Little fought against public
discouragement and finally did something he was not expected to do, Chicken Little saved his town.

The Gui vessel isdefinitely less cluttered than the Zun vessel which uses every inch of space
possible to cover the vessel in some ornamentation. The reason for this may be due to many factors.
Perhaps there was a technique the Zun culture used that the Gui culture never obtained. A close
inspection of the Gui bronze shows that there are many imperfections in the shape of the vessel
which may either be due to time, or casting technique. The Gui bronze does appear to have been cast
from clay, as it takes up the same texture of clay on the surface and the warped pieces indicate clay
casting; however, this may also be due to time. The Zun vessel, on the other hand, appears almost
free of imperfections which may indicate the techniques used were more advanced in the time of the
Zun.
Perhaps the techniques used by the Zun culture were too costly and so the Gui culture adopted clay
casting or whatever technique which was used to create the Gui vessel. The culture of the Zun
appears to be more fixated on spiritualism than the Zun. This can
