This document is a project proposal for a case study on applying passive design strategies to reduce heat gain in tropical box houses. The student proposes to study how egg crate structures, vegetation, building layout and openings can aid in passive shading and ventilation. Specifically, the egg crate structure and surrounding vegetation provide natural shading. Meanwhile, orienting the building along a northeast-southwest axis and including large openings maximizes cross ventilation to reduce heat gain without active cooling systems. The student will analyze how these passive strategies help achieve thermal comfort in tropical climates.
