Intended learning outcomes Develop skills in designing English  listening  tasks for  blended  learning through the use of ICT; Develop a  global perspective  when connected using ICT,  particularly identifying appropriate online resources to listen to world English; Develop  critical thinking  and  reflective thinking  skills when discussing and debating innovative practices with technology integration for language learning and teaching.
Purpose of listening To pass a quiz on information heard; To predict some of the information expected to be included in the utterance; To assess how much of the incoming information will be new and how much will be familiar. Dunkel 1986
What is listening? Part of the communication process (interactive/one-way) Hear: relate to prior knowledge; Understand: affected by social and cultural background; Interpret: affected by personal experiences, age, gender, cognitive ability; Assimilate: ability to construct knowledge.
Types of listening Comprehensive listening to understand content and information Critical listening to evaluate information/opinion on what is heard Active listening for formulating understanding or building knowledge from analysing information for effective communication.
Listening skills for S4~6 Listen for information, ideas, intended meanings, views, attitudes and feelings in a variety of spoken texts Understand  and interpret spoken texts in a range of situations and for different purposes Identify  details  that support a  main idea Predict  the likely development of ideas Understand the use of  discourse markers Establish and  infer meanings  from clues Distinguish between  facts and opinions  in spoken texts Understand  speakers’ intentions , views, attitudes or feelings Understand speakers with a variety of  accents ( English Language Curriculum and Assessment Guide for Secondary 4 ─ 6, 2007)

Listening strategies you use Action: Work in pairs and summarize what is heard. Evaluate what you do as you listen. Suggest strategies used.
Strategies on listening comprehension Predicting  or anticipating content of the foreign-language message (during the pre-listening exercise);  Monitoring  for discrepancies in messages received (during the listening exercise); Selecting  relevant  and ignoring irrelevant messages (during the listening exercise);  Checking accuracy  of comprehension (during the post-listening exercise).
