MOTIVATION & OVERVIEW

Transformers constitute vital components in Electric Power Systems, most utilities and industries use large number of transformers
of various rating in their systems. There have been several reports of unforeseen, premature failures of transformers in service.
There is a growing need to monitor the transformers in operation. The understanding of insulation system of transformers and the
significance and contribution of insulting oils for these transformers is of immense importance for proper maintenance of power
transformers. Condition monitoring plays a vital role in predictive and prevention maintenance.

It is felt that interaction of researchers, manufacturers of Transformers and engineers of power utilities can help to
disseminate knowledge and update with the state of the art technology and also exchange experience on various aspects of
Transformer maintenance.

While the operating principles of transformers have remained the same for nearly a century, the challenges of maintaining and
testing transformers have evolved along with transformer design and construction. Modern transformers are designed to closer
tolerances than ever before. Proper testing is essential for evaluating the condition of a transformer. This predictive data will
guide maintenance activities and help prevent catastrophic failure that damages downstream to equipment and endangerment
of personnel.

Today’s capital spending on new and replacement transformers is at its lowest level in decades. To make matters worse, the load on
each transformer (or its utilization) continues to grow. Increased equipment utilization, deferred capital expenditures and reduced
maintenance expenses are all challenges facing today’s transformer owner. The power industry is more technology-driven now as
nations move toward the smart grid and renewable energy, so the need for training continues to increase.

With budget restraints, what testing should be done and how often you should perform maintenance is crucial. This workshop is
pertinent as it will review what traditional and new maintenance testing procedures should be utilized by transformer owners. We
will also look at the latest developments in oil testing, analysis, on-line monitoring, and oil restoration emphasis on the need to
ensure effective early detection and prevention of transformer failures by incorporating effective routine transformer maintenance
and testing to enable early trouble shooting and therefore saving cost of repairs and minimizing disruptions.

• Discuss the electrical testing performed on transformers such as insulation resistance testing, excitation and
   power factor testing
• Calculate polarization index and temperature corrections
• Learn how to perform oil sampling, testing, drying, filling and filtering

                                                                     COURSE BACKGROUND

This course covers the theory, operation, maintenance and testing of power transformers and auxiliary equipment. Topics included
are transformer fundamentals, transformer ratings, transformer cooling, nitrogen gas systems and insulation systems. The course
concludes with in-depth discussions on transformer testing techniques. This course is applicable to technicians and engineers
who need a sound understanding of power transformer operation and maintenance.
Delegates will learn safe and proper maintenance and testing procedures on pad-mounted, power transformers. The
course covers transformers used in commercial and industrial power distribution systems, including oil and dry-type units. Larger
power transformers used in utility applications are also covered.
Load and no-load tap changer maintenance, ac and dc testing, routine inspections and oil sampling and testing are covered in
detail. Students will learn how to perform routine oil tests, and understand how to perform the major tests that are required. A
variety of electrical test equipment from various manufacturers will be discussed.
