Check out this great roti Oliver made!!!
Did you make some roti? I did!
Time to practice some Thai vocabulary from the book!
Kha means…
“Yes”
Soi means…
“Street”
Chang means…
“Elephant”
Sawatdee khrap means…
“Hello”
Wat means…
“Temple”
Aroy mak mak means…
“I love it!”
Khawp khun kha means…
“Thank you”
Now let’s get into the
book…
What kind of person is Tua?
What kind of person is Auntie Orchid?
What kind of people are Nak and Nang?
Do you have a pet? If so, tell us his/her name in the
chat window.
How did you come up with that name? Do you think
your pet likes his/her name? How do you know?
Do you like YOUR name? If you do not, what do you
wish it was?
Compare the farangs (foreigners) that
Tua encounters in the market…
…with the farangs she meets at the
elephant sanctuary:
A lot of people teach Tua wise things about life. These
are called precepts.
What’s your favorite precept from the book?
Here are some of the ones I found:
• Life is a wheel, and we’re all just spokes in the
wheel of life.
• It is easier to get an elephant in a kitchen than it is
to get her out again.
• Sometimes the best way to stop wagging tongues
is to give them a part in the play.
• Gifts that are shared travel back in a circle to us.
• Sometimes having nothing is like having
everything.
Are there any precepts you have
learned from your teachers, parents,
grandparents, friends or relatives?
Who or what frightens the mahouts after
they’ve climbed up a tree, forcing them to
release Tua?
Flying foxes, that’s who!
Why are elephants treated so badly? What
can we do to help elephants to have
better lives?
Ankus (elephant goad)
Did this part make you laugh? 
Is that true???
Thanks for joining us today for book club!
Next time, we’re going to France!
