Editor's Notes

  • #17: Mashable’s Twitter Guidebook - http://mashable.com/guidebook/twitter/
  • #19: MentionUsing a person’s Twitter username, you and others can mention them in your Tweets by preceding it with the @ symbol, eg: "Glad your shipment arrived @janesmith
  • #21: RetweetWhen you see a Tweet by another user that you want to share, click Retweet below it to forward it to your followers instantly.
  • #22: If you want to privately Tweet to a particular user who's already following you, start your Tweet with DM or D to direct-message them, eg: "DM @joesmith234 what is your order number?"
  • #23: HashtagUsers often put # and then a word or phrase in their Tweets to categorize them for others eg: "Check out our new products for the Fall: http://t.co/link2 #fallsale" Think of hashtags as the theme of your Tweet. Users can then click on a hashtag to see other similarly-themed tweets and find yours in search.
  • #24: Lists - Curated groups of other Twitter users. Used to tie specific individuals into a group on your Twitter account. Displayed on the right side menu of your homepage.
  • #27: Twitter’s X FactorInfluence - 6 times as much content (Blogs, Tweets, etc.) is created by those on on Twitter, than those who are not - Twitter has the most powerful influencers. (ExactTarget and CoTweet Study August 3, 2010)Brevity - 140 characters - short, to the point. Accessibility - Don’t need to be a ‘friend’ or follower to connect and have a conversation. Great leveler. Story of #socialstory conferenceInteraction - Conversations, Connections, Sharing.Versatility - Universal use. Doesn’t do just one thing, it does it all. Text, images, video, links.
  • #32: There really are no real ‘rules’ about how to use Twitter - but there are right and wrong ways to engage with people.
  • #33: Share. Share photos and behind the scenes info about your business. Even better, give a glimpse of developing projects and events. Users come to Twitter to get and share the latest, so give it to them!
  • #34: Listen. Regularly monitor the comments about your company, brand, and products.
  • #35: Ask. Ask questions of your followers to glean valuable insights and show that you are listening.
  • #36: Respond. Respond to compliments and feedback in real time
  • #37: Reward. Tweet updates about special offers, discounts and time-sensitive deals.
  • #38: Demonstrate wider leadership and know-how. Reference articles and links about the bigger picture as it relates to your business.
  • #39: Champion your stakeholders. Retweet and reply publicly to great tweets posted by your followers and customers.
  • #40: Establish the right voice. Twitter users tend to prefer a direct, genuine, and of course, a likable tone from your business, but think about yourvoice as you Tweet. How do you want your business to appear to the Twitter community?
  • #44: Backgrounds
  • #47: URL Shorteners
  • #49: Photo Sharing
  • #51: Video Sharing
  • #54: Tweetstats
  • #57: Klout
  • #62: Seesmic
  • #65: Hootsuite
  • #67: TweetDeck
