Requirement of UIIT-assessment item 3

For infusing ICT in education, it is believed to be with more advantages than the
disadvantages. As demonstrated in the lessons plans I attached in the e-portfolio, ICT
tools appeared in all of them and it served to be a crucial element in my lesson. I can
dare to say, if not for the help of the ICT tools, it would not be a successful lesson.

My teaching experience can proved that using ICT do raise the effectiveness of
teaching. Traditionally, teachers teaching in a classroom will be aided with only
chalks and blackboard. However, concerning the effectiveness, it would be hard to say
it is good enough. Students we teach nowadays born in an age of computer, they get
use to colorful data, screens and animation. Scholar’s finding suggested that teenagers
born after 80’s (not to say students we are teaching are those born after 90’s) attention
span is low, they find it difficult to concentrate when reading books or printed articles,
that’s why they mostly read e-newspaper only. As a result, I think it is important to
adapt our teaching with ICT tools so as to attract the students and raise their learning
interest. As shown in the discussion in assessment item 2, using ICT tools, video-clips
and PowerPoint to teach connectives make a lesson more effective and interesting.

Also, one shall not neglect positive effect ICT tools create on classroom management.
It is not difficult to understand how risky it will be facing kids all the time with your
back. Traditional teaching methods of using chalks and blackboards only forced
teachers to take this risk. However, we are so lucky to live in an age of computer. ICT
tools drastically reduce this risk. Things used to write on blackboard can now present
by PowerPoint, teachers can face the students all the time.

Furthermore, since students find lesson more interesting with the teaching aid of ICT
tools, they can concentrate in lesson, they think lessons are not as boring as they once
believe, thus, the times of making the lesson chaotic will be less than before. These
are obviously positive effect of using ICT tools on classroom management.

However, with all the advantages of ICT tools in teaching, the government funding
for implementing comprehensive ICT teaching in all school is still not enough.
Installing computer, with license software and a projector in every classroom need
tremendous sums of money, it is really a heavy burden to school. Thus, I think the
Education Bureau should make great effort in fighting for greater budget for every
school since it will be beneficial to the education in Hong Kong as a whole.
In my lesson, I am going to teach my kids to use 4 types of Adjective Patterns. I put
the sentence structure and sample sentences one by one in the PowerPoint. To make it
more interesting and attractive, I add colorful pictures in the PowerPoint; show clearly
the sentence structure and my instruction by PowerPoint instead of writing out in the
Blackboard. Also, for convenience, instead of taking an old-fashioned CD player and
recorder to the classroom, I insert some sound tracks in the PowerPoint. Whenever I
need to show kids how to read out the sentence in a native way, I just need to click the
sound button in the PowerPoint.

In conclusion, I find that using ICT in teaching can raise the effectiveness in teaching
students. It is convenient, funny and attractive, both to my students and me. In my
coming teaching life, I believe I will try to source and try out different ICT teaching
resources to enhance my efficiency in teaching English.
