BSCS 2 (M-B)
 CPU Stands for Central Processing Unit
 CPU is the main hardware component that runs
and controls all instructions in a digital system
 Known as the brain of the computer
 It performs calculations, logic operations, and
manages the overall communication between
various parts of a device.
What is a CPU?
 Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
 Control Unit (CU)
 Registers
 Cache Memory
Components of a CPU
 This part performs basic math operations like
addition, subtraction, and logical comparisons
such as AND, OR, NOT.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
 It handles the coordination of the CPU. It tells
the memory, ALU, and input/output devices
when and how to act.
Control Unit (CU)
 Registers are temporary storage areas that
store small amounts of data or instructions the
CPU is currently working with.
Registers
 This is super-fast memory located near the
CPU that stores frequently used data to speed
up operations.
Cache Memory
 Fetch: The instruction is retrieved from
memory.
 Decode: The instruction is translated into a
form the CPU can understand.
 Execute: The required operation (e.g.,
calculation or data move) is carried out.
 Store: The output or result is written back to
memory or passed to another part of the
system.
Working of CPU
 Single-Core CPU: Can perform one task at a
time. Slower but useful in simple devices.
 Multi-Core CPU: Contains 2, 4, 8, or more
processing cores for faster multitasking.
 Embedded CPUs: Found in devices like washing
machines, smart TVs, and routers.
Types of CPUs
 Enables fast and reliable processing of data
 Handles multiple types of instructions efficiently
 Makes automation and computing possible in
almost every industry
 Constant evolution with improved speed,
efficiency, and power-saving
Importance and Advantages
 The CPU is an essential part of modern
electronics. From simple home tasks to
professional computing, it is the core engine
that powers everything. Understanding how the
CPU works helps us appreciate the complexity
and intelligence behind our daily devices.
