This document summarizes lessons learned from a workshop that used design thinking and co-creation to engage youth in social innovation in Uzbekistan. Some key lessons included: providing a balance between guidance and open-ended problems; choosing locally relevant problems and language carefully; incorporating making prototypes early; and ensuring knowledge and processes can be repeated, shared, and scaled up. The goal of the 8-day workshop was to encourage interdisciplinary problem solving around improving volunteerism, though determining the optimal time frame was challenging. Overall, the workshop highlighted both best practices and difficulties of using design thinking with youth.
