GS1 Healthcare
Voluntary, Global Healthcare User Group To lead the healthcare sector to the successful development and implementation of global standards by bringing together experts in healthcare to enhance patient safety and supply chain efficiencies .
Challenges in the Healthcare supply chain Medication errors result in additional treatments, disabilities and even loss of life Counterfeiting is an increasing global threat Traceability from manufacturer to patient is unworkable Product recalls can be difficult to manage, in particular for healthcare providers A lot of manual interventions in the healthcare supply chain decrease its efficiency and accuracy
Ensuring the ‘ 5 Patient Rights ’ The right patient The right dose The right time The right route The right product
Lack of global standards
Scanning codes at the bedside
Global automatic identification standards GS1 Standards … 6 billion ‘beeps’ per day Product identification in Healthcare should be ever-present—as it is in the retail and grocery industries
Solution for tracking and tracing products (CFC) through the Healthcare supply chain 2. GS1 Bar coded product is delivered to the Hospital by TCP 4. Stock Fridge 5. Issue Fridges 3. Hospital 7. Prepare product 8. Patient receives CFC Information captured: GTIN, Batch, Expiry, Serial number, Delivery location (GLN) + patient identifier GSRN 1. Product (CFC) is sent by manufacturer with GS1 barcode 6. Issue to patient Patient: GSRN Healthcare professional: GSRN Location: GLN Product: GTIN
Why use GS1 Global Standards? Based on open GS1/EPCglobal standards Identification numbers are ‘fit for purpose’ Provides interoperability essential for mass adoption. Copes with different data carrier/capture technologies Enables Healthcare providers and suppliers to ‘ future proof ’ processes Cost savings for all involved Enables traceability from manufacturer to healthcare provider to patient bedside Based on best practices Access to industry user groups GS1 is community managed (membership organisation) GS1 can deliver on the ASTM – E1714-07 Standard Guide for the Properties of a Universal Healthcare Identifier

Editor's Notes

  • #6: GS1 Ireland is a member organisation of GS1 and like all other Mos, we are a not for profit organisation which is neutral as in we don’t endorse any product or service and also user driven in that we exist to serve the needs of our members. If a member doesn’t come up with a reason to do something, nothing is done. We are essentially Standards facilitators. Our main objective is to progress the development of bar coding, scanning and e-commerce messaging in Ireland. We started in the food sector, and are now involved in every industry sector in Ireland. In recent years Healthcare has become our no.1 development area. 93% of all prescribed medicines in Ireland have a GS1 standard barcode on their packs. We are working with the Dept of Health, HIQUA and the HSE to form new standards in healthcare.
  • #8: Bar Coding Level 1 FMCG v1 July 2006
  • #13: Barcodes are just keys to unlocking product data. Research has shown that data in all supply chains is well below acceptable standards. Human error is unavoidable, you have heard the saying “garbage in, garbage out”. GS1 through its datapools and eComm initiatives is introducing standards to combat and eliminate bad data in a supply chain. Procurement Systems Payment & Accounts Transport & Logistics Front End Systems Warehousing & Storage Traceability & Recall
  • #14: HSE National Sterile Instrument Tracking Solution The Publication of the HSE’s Recommended Practices for CDU’s, Endoscope Reprocessing Units and Dentists now explicitly recommend the use of GS1 Standards. SJUH – Leading this rollout with all Trays identified and tracked using GS1 Standards Registry of all Healthcare Providers and Locations (GS1 GLN Registry) Asset security, e.g. track & trace Patient safety Traceability and Authentication Reliable basis for patient costing systems (VFM)
  • #15: HSE National Sterile Instrument Tracking Solution The Publication of the HSE’s Recommended Practices for CDU’s, Endoscope Reprocessing Units and Dentists now explicitly recommend the use of GS1 Standards.
  • #23: So in Practice, Each location and Van were assigned a GLN, scanned into stock fridge at hospital, scanned out of stock and into the issue fridge upon request. Scanned again upon receipt of prescription to patient then CFC is administered to the patient. All this using the EPC network is event managed for traceability, stock control and electronic patient record.
  • #24: GS1 believes that the GS1 Standards can deliver on all of the above for the Irish Health Service as well as ASTM – E1714-07 Standard Guide for the Properties of a Universal Healthcare Identifier
  • #26: To be viewed in slide mode
