- 1. Introduction & Guiding questions In this investigation the task specifies that I must create a video or animation to inform and educate a specific group of people on a health based technology. This task includes the investigation, research, planning, creation, and evaluation of the product. The one focused here is an artificial or bionic eye, one that can function similarly to the human eye by showing a rough pixilated image on the retina. I will use a model that has been used over 10 times in the USA since 2012, and has been tested before and since; plus it has been approved by the FDA in the USA. It is called the Argus II (2). The human eye is one of the best cameras in the world, and I am not the only one who believes this; its complexity and simplicity over amazes me. Throughout my life I seemed to always have a better eyesight than most of my friends and family making me more interested in its anatomy. If I had lost my eyesight somehow, my life would be turned around and ruined. I would miss everything that is happening even if I could hear or touch it. The eyesight is a key feature to a happy life because you can see so much beautiful things, and learn so much only with your eyesight; and this feature is indispensible to any human being. This product and task relates to Health and Social education by informing the many audiences who are interested by this technology and by helping and involving the human body with the technology. Bionic Eye: --Product: -How affordable is the technology and its requirements? -How helpful is the technology? -What are its benefits and its disadvantages of the technology? -How mass-produced can it be? -How long was it tested before public release? - How clear is the image projected to the person? -Is the technology suitable for all people and situations? -What proves that the technology works? -What audience does this affect? -What does the technology look like? -What are they doing to improve it?
- 2. --Presentation: -What story will I create from this product? -Is the animation longer than 3 minutes? -What colors or images could be shown to improve the animation? -Is the Sound/Music used enjoyable? -Is the animation and the story understandable? -Are the facts inside the animation readable and short enough for anyone to understand? -Did the audience learn anything from the animation? -Did the specific audience understand the animation and were they well informed? -What kind of story will the animation tell? Research: Summary: After looking for the causes and solutions for a bionic eye, I have come to the best source or prototype. The Argus II by Second Sight has been the best prototype and source for the bionic eye although it only affects a certain group of people. The model can only be installed if the client has a problem with the actual pigments that sense light and dark in the eye, and also if the retina and the optic nerves are normal and intact because the model uses receptors and wires to transmit pixilated images into the retina. The prototype or now product was built and tested until its second version, why the 'II' (2) in Argus. They also specify every characteristic and object in their product in interviews and blogs about it. I fell that this technology is trustworthy and since their company specializes in this field, they are definitely professionals in it making them more trustworthy. Also, Being FDA approved in the USA is always good, making them absolute chefs in their field. The field of artificial aid in vision is not very advanced present day because of its high costs and its low ideas to create such a product. Very few companies like Second sight have put effort in their clients, needs, and testing to create such a revolutionary product. The Latin word “Argus” refers to a giant in Greek mythology with 100 eyes, Argus Panoptes, who was considered all-seeing. Argus was the servant of Hera, goddess of women and marriage as well as the wife of Zeus. Zeus seduced the nymph Io who was also the priestess of Hera. In order to hide her from Zeus, Hera transformed her into a white heifer and asked Argus to watch over Io and protect her from Zeus. Making the blind see is a dream for all humanity that has been asked for centuries, but since Argus II, there is hope for a better future. In a healthy eye, the photoreceptors (rods and cones) in the retina convert light into tiny electrochemical impulses that are sent through the optic nerve and into the brain, where they are decoded into images. If the photoreceptors no longer function correctly—due to conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa—the first step in
- 3. this process is disrupted, and the visual system cannot transform light into images. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System ("Argus II") is designed to bypass the damaged photoreceptors altogether. A miniature video camera housed in the patient’s glasses captures a scene. The video is sent to a small patient-worn computer (i.e., the video processing unit – VPU) where it is processed and transformed into instructions that are sent back to the glasses via a cable. These instructions are transmitted wirelessly to an antenna in the implant. The signals are then sent to the electrode array, which emits small pulses of electricity. These pulses are intended to bypass the damaged photoreceptors and stimulate the retina’s remaining cells, which transmit the visual information along the optic nerve to the brain. This process is intended to create the perception of patterns of light which patients can learn to interpret as visual patterns. Product: The technology only works if the patient has a problem or disease with his/hers retina or macula. It displays a pixilated image into the macula. Currently it is expensive because of its very precise components that have to be correct or else the whole product is broken. Currently it has been used over 10 times, which might seem little but it allot since it was only recently approved by the FDA in the USA. It looks and works like this: Presentation: I will be using 'GoAnimate', an online program that is free (for most of its features) that gives the ability to make a simple or complex animate video with all its templates and functions. Its limitations are that most of its components are locked and you are required to pay for a extended membership.
