Unit 1: Learning strategies.

Although learning seems to happen naturally, people learn recurring to specific and
often unconscious actions used to complete tasks depending on their learning styles.
This unit dealt with how teachers can train themselves in order to train students to learn
metacognitive aspects of their learning which are translated into strategies, techniques
and activities.

As teachers we can help students to consciously apply some strategies and some
techniques that can result in promoting students’ autonomy when studying and learning.
Since these strategies are task oriented and also usually problem solving oriented,
teachers need to be aware of what kind of tasks we are giving to our students so that we
can identify what are the most suitable strategies to teach.

In this unit we created a language learning profile in which we selected an ordinary
student, we interviewed him and made him write a short piece of writing in order to
diagnose what issues our learner had and what we could do in order to promote the
conscious use of strategies personalized to the learner’s issues in productive skills
through a lesson plan that took into account the issues and strategic based instruction.

Although this lesson plan was based on only one student which makes this exercise hard
to replicate in contexts where there are at least 40 students with different learning styles
and strategic needs, it made me realize that we can always make an effort and observe
how our students study and learn because with simple techniques we can affect the way
they learn positively.
