1 A man has helped rescue his father from a yacht hundreds of miles away without leaving his house.
Paul Sims in Oxfordshire, England, received a call from his father, Alan, on his mobile. He was near
the northern coast of Spain when he had problems with ropes and the propeller of his yacht. Alan
tried to contact the local coastguard on his radio, but it was not working. Paul Sims said: ‘We got a
call at seven on Tuesday evening. We dialled 999 and they contacted the coastguard at Falmouth
who have contact with all the international rescue groups. By ten dad was safely in a local harbour.’
2 A round-Britain sailor was stuck in fog off the Northeast English coast for four days — but he was
just ninety metres from land! Alan McKeand carefully planned his sailing trip of a lifetime, but as he
set sail in perfectly calm conditions from Hull, he was unaware of the thick fog ahead of him. When
he hit the fog, he stopped the boat, hoping the weather would change and blow it away. Four days
later he was rescued by the coastguard. Mr McKeand said: ‘I didn’t know the coastguard was worried
until they travelled out to see me. I was always taught not to call the emergency services unless you
are really in trouble. I wasn’t worried: I had plenty of good books on board and a radio.’
3 A French yachtswoman was rescued from freezing waters near Antarctica, nearly twenty-four hours
after strong winds had capsized her boat. Her rescuer, Giovanni Soldini of Italy, was competing in the
same round-the-world yacht race as Isabelle Autissier. The Italian used his radar system to look for
Ms Autissier’s yacht. Her distress call lasted only a few seconds - a few desperate words on a satellite
telephone that her yacht had capsized in freezing conditions. Giovanni changed direction to rescue
her, sailing through wild weather. He sailed more than two hundred miles in less than twenty-four
hours. After her rescue she faxed a note saying: ‘I’ll do some tourism in Italy ... not unhappy.’

2 Now say if these questions are true (T) or false (F).
a Mr McKeand was very worried. F e Mr Sims was sailing close to the Spanish coast.
b Ms Autissier’s boat was broken.
c Mr Sims was travelling with his son. f Mr McKeand’s radio wasn’t working.
d Mr Soldini was in a race. g Ms Autissier wasn’t worried.

3 Who — Ms Autissier, Mr Soldini, Mr Sims or Mr McKeand — might say the following?
a It was too dark to see anything except the huge waves. Mr Soldini (and possibly Ms Autissier).
     b I didn’t know anyone was worried.
c I always take my telephone in case of emergencies.
d I was so cold and wet, I didn’t know how I would survive.
e My Italian competitor was fantastic!
f I was trying to sail around Britain but I didn’t get very far!
g The race doesn’t matter — anyone would do the same.

a An unexpected accident b Jumping for fun c Space invasion

Rodd Milner is taking extreme sports to a new level, or to be precise, a
new atmosphere. Rodd intends to wear an astronaut’s suit, travel forty
thousand metres up to the edge of space in a balloon and jump! He will
then fly towards earth at a speed of between 1,100 to 1,400 kms per
hour and become the first human to break the sound barrier without
using a jet plane, car or other vehicle. His final trip up will be in a helium
balloon and should take about two and a half hours. His jump down to
   earth, less than ten minutes!
The key to Rodd’s survival will be his spacesuit. It will be pressurized to
protect Rodd from the changes in air pressure and the cold. When he
reaches 40,000, metres the temperature will be -80ºC. If he is successful,
Rodd will break a number of records. These will include the highest flight
in a balloon and the furthest fall without a parachute.

  • 4. Rescued! 11.4 Reading and writing Unit11 1 Read about these boat rescues and match the pictures to the stories. a 3 b c d e f 1 A man has helped rescue his father from a yacht hundreds of miles away without leaving his house. Paul Sims in Oxfordshire, England, received a call from his father, Alan, on his mobile. He was near the northern coast of Spain when he had problems with ropes and the propeller of his yacht. Alan tried to contact the local coastguard on his radio, but it was not working. Paul Sims said: ‘We got a call at seven on Tuesday evening. We dialled 999 and they contacted the coastguard at Falmouth who have contact with all the international rescue groups. By ten dad was safely in a local harbour.’ 2 A round-Britain sailor was stuck in fog off the Northeast English coast for four days — but he was just ninety metres from land! Alan McKeand carefully planned his sailing trip of a lifetime, but as he set sail in perfectly calm conditions from Hull, he was unaware of the thick fog ahead of him. When he hit the fog, he stopped the boat, hoping the weather would change and blow it away. Four days later he was rescued by the coastguard. Mr McKeand said: ‘I didn’t know the coastguard was worried until they travelled out to see me. I was always taught not to call the emergency services unless you are really in trouble. I wasn’t worried: I had plenty of good books on board and a radio.’ 3 A French yachtswoman was rescued from freezing waters near Antarctica, nearly twenty-four hours after strong winds had capsized her boat. Her rescuer, Giovanni Soldini of Italy, was competing in the same round-the-world yacht race as Isabelle Autissier. The Italian used his radar system to look for Ms Autissier’s yacht. Her distress call lasted only a few seconds - a few desperate words on a satellite telephone that her yacht had capsized in freezing conditions. Giovanni changed direction to rescue her, sailing through wild weather. He sailed more than two hundred miles in less than twenty-four hours. After her rescue she faxed a note saying: ‘I’ll do some tourism in Italy ... not unhappy.’ 2 Now say if these questions are true (T) or false (F). a Mr McKeand was very worried. © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE 55
  • 5. Rescued! 11.5 Culture Unit11 Adrenalin junkies 1 Look at the photo and tick (✔) the best title. Read the article. Were you right? a An unexpected accident b Jumping for fun c Space invasion Rodd Milner is taking extreme sports to a new level, or to be precise, a new atmosphere. Rodd intends to wear an astronaut’s suit, travel forty thousand metres up to the edge of space in a balloon and jump! He will then fly towards earth at a speed of between 1,100 to 1,400 kms per hour and become the first human to break the sound barrier without using a jet plane, car or other vehicle. His final trip up will be in a helium balloon and should take about two and a half hours. His jump down to earth, less than ten minutes! The key to Rodd’s survival will be his spacesuit. It will be pressurized to protect Rodd from the changes in air pressure and the cold. When he reaches 40,000, metres the temperature will be -80ºC. If he is successful, Rodd will break a number of records. These will include the highest flight in a balloon and the furthest fall without a parachute. ‘I’m an adrenalin junkie’, he said, ‘but I am always very careful about how I prepare’. Let’s hope that his parachute opens! 2 Look at the information about an adventure sports centre.
