Religion played a major role in the founding and settlement of the American colonies. Different religious groups, like the Puritans, Pilgrims, Quakers, Anglicans, and Catholics established colonies where they could freely practice their own faith without persecution. Some, like the Quakers, believed in complete religious freedom and tolerance for all faiths, which helped their colony of Pennsylvania become religiously diverse and economically prosperous. Overall, religion was one of the primary factors influencing where early colonists chose to settle in North America.
