Unit 8- Imperialism
 I. Foraker Act- Ended US military rule in Puerto
Rico
 Set up a civil government
 US could appoint PR’s governor and upper
house
 Puerto Ricans became US citizens in 1917
 II. Platt Amendment- changes to the Cuban
constitution, added by the US
 Made Cuba a U.S. protectorate, a country
whose affairs are controlled by a stronger power
 It included:
 1. Cuba could not make treaties that limited its
power within Cuba itself
 2. The US could intervene in Cuba
 3. Cuban government was not to go into debt
 4. The US could buy or lease Cuban land for
military use and refueling
 III. Philippine-American War
 A. US took control of Philippines with the
Treaty of Paris ($20M)
 B. Emilio Aguinaldo- Filipino rebel leader that
believed US had promised independence
 C. The War Lasted 3 years (1899-1902)
 Claimed 20,000 Filipinos lives
 4,000 American soldiers died
 War cost the US $400 million
 D. Philippine Islands became independent on
July 4, 1946
 IV. The U.S. and China
 A. The US feared that China would be colonized
by Europe and they would be shut out
 B. Open Door Notes- Letters issued by the US
to all other imperialist nations, creating an open
door of trade with China
 Boxer Rebellion
 Europe dominated most Chinese cities,
resentment among Chinese grew
 Secret groups known as “Boxers” (martial arts)
killed hundreds of missionaries and foreigners
 In 1900 troops from US and Europe put down
the Boxer Rebellion
