- 2. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: i. State the various units of storage and their values. ii. Differentiate between kilometer, kilogram and kilobyte iii. Distinguish between kilobyte, megabyte and gigabyte.
- 3. Definition of Terms i. Bit: This refers to the smallest unit of information that can be stored in a machine. A single bit can only hold 1 and/ or 0. ii. Nibble: a nibble is a collection of four bits. 3 2 1 0
- 4. iii. Bytes: A byte consists of eight bits and is the smallest addressable data item on a microprocessor. The bits in a byte are normally numbered from zero to seven using the convention shown below. 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Note: A byte also contains exactly two nibbles.
- 5. iv. Word: This is a term for the natural unit of data used by a particular computer design. In a nutshell, word is a group of 16 bits. 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0 Note: A word contains exactly two bytes or four nibbles.
- 6. v. Double Word: A double word is exactly a pair of word. Therefore, a double word quantity is 32 bits long . • note: double word can be divided into a high order word and low order word or four different bytes or eight different nibbles.
