ANALYSIS VS SYNTHESIS

DATA VS HUMAN BRAIN
Data is a tool... it doesn’t replace the Human
Brain
“...the difference between analysis (detailed
examination of the elements or structure of
something, typically as a basis for discussion
or interpretation) and synthesis (combination
or composition, in particular).
Data is uniquely suited to the former,
the human mind is uniquely suited to
the latter.”
Phil Hill,
Ed Tech Writer
DATA AS A TOOL
• Analytics provide
data
• that inform people
• provide insights
that might not be
obvious
DATA AS A TOOL
• Analytics can also help teachers act more efficiently by surfacing
information that might otherwise take time to extract
• Think about counting posts in a discussion forum….
• We then use this information to
personalize and tailor learning to the
individual student…
• Personalized learning is not a product you
can buy.
• It’s not a report you can run.
• It is a strategy that good teachers can
implement to achieve student success.
ANALYTICS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE
Over the last several decades...
Thousands of studies &
research of many aspects of
student success and the
psychology for learning
ANALYTICS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE
Most universities understand:
• High school GPA
• SAT scores
• first generation in college
• Income
• having a major
• involvement in university
community
ANALYTICS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE
We’re starting to understand and act on the
‘red flags’
• first semester performance (SLS)
• midterm grades
• early warning flags raised by faculty
ANALYTICS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE
FIU is taking steps to reform teaching & support:
• hybrid courses
• active learning designs
• guide on the side/sage on the stage
• adaptive learning
• early intervention
• peer mentoring
• more advising
WE WANT TO SHOW YOU
• Some of the data WE
use…
• Then some of the data
YOU can use to
personalize learning

Analytics for FIU Online
GOOGLE ANALYTICS
Google Analytics is an internal analytics tool used in FIU Online to
monitor our Blackboard Learn Production environment for certain key
pieces of information such as:
• Number of sessions and page views
• Peak times (hourly, daily, yearly)
• General geolocation of users
• Mobile usage information
This information can influence anything from coverage and work schedules to the way we develop
content.

Data Reports for Instructional Designers
Reports in the
Instructional
Designer Core
Curriculum (IDCC)
can give instructional
designers a clear view
on how they are
meeting their yearly
professional
development goals.
Data Reports for Instructional Designers
Development Cycle
Reports work in
conjunction with
CreatorPro to give
Program Managers a
holistic view on the
development of courses
by their program (as well
as drilled-down to a
specific ID).
STUDENT SUPPORT
FIU Online also has its own set of analytics tools powered by Tableau.
We monitor all types of Support cases resolved by our Support and
LMS Teams.
Information from these reports allow us to identify popular trends on
how students reach out for support, as well as easily identify recurring
issues in course development specific to a course, for example.

Editor's Notes

  • #37: We’re happy to announce 5 new reports As you all might have heard, the University purchased a university-wide license for Tableau Tableau is a data visualization tool and we’re working on new reports for college deans, college and department heads and even faculty reports These are the first 5 sets of reports we are releasing today If you’re a Dean, Department or College head, you can access these reports now Login to our site, online..fiu.edu > Faculty > Pedagogy >Analytics and you’ll have links to the reports Simply log-in with your MyAccounts credentials and you can see the reports
  • #38: One report we can highlight from these 5 is the Course Performance by Instructional Method Comparison This one might be really useful when comparing how students are performing depending on how the course is taken So we can see pass rates, failure rates, drop rates, incompletes, withdrawn rates and see how face to face compares to fully online
  • #39: So again, these 5 reports are live right now for deans, and department chairs And you can access them as Embedded links from our website OR you can log in directly to Tableau by going to analytics.fiu.edu
  • #41: -This is the instructor view for the RealizeIt platform -Over on the left, you have the list of students and how for along they’ve progressed throught the course -On the right, you can click and view each student’s personalized learning path for the course
  • #42: -If we expand the People box, we can view even more information on the modules they’ve covered, how much time in hours they still have left to cover and the last time they access
  • #43: -For each student, the system will alert us and let you know, hey Edison Flanders has really been strugglign with this one piece of a module, Properties of Multiplication in Alegebra -We can then intervene in different ways to help that student continue to progress
  • #44: -As a whole, you can layer everyone’s maps on top of each other and see where most of the class is gettign stuck -Here, the system is alerting us to which modules need interventions -And, it’s also telling us which modules have a high success rate; so maybe we can go in there and try to see what’s working and tweak some of the other modules
  • #46: So again, these 5 reports are live right now for deans, and department chairs And you can access them as Embedded links from our website OR you can log in directly to Tableau by going to analytics.fiu.edu
