Lacie lies face down in a swimming pool, struggling with mental health issues. Her brother is in jail, which troubles her greatly. She hears voices and sees figures watching her. At her university presentation, she spills tea on her notes while feeling paranoid from the voices and laughter around her. After a difficult presentation, she submerges herself in the pool, screaming underwater as her hair floats at the surface.

- 1. EXT SWIMMING POOL - DAY Lacie lies face down in a pool. Her hair floats and separates with the movement of the water, her body is still. LACIE V/O: We are all Prisoners held captive in the deepest recesses of our minds. UNSOUND TITLE APPEARS OVER THE VISUALS INT LOUNGE ROOM- DAY Lacie’s mother sits next to her on the couch. MOTHER I visited Tallen today.. he was asking about you. LACIE How’s he look? MOTHER You should see him.. I think he needs you right now Lacie. This makes Lacie uncomfortable as she has avoided going. LACIE I’ve had so much work, you know? and I’m not sure I could bear seeing him locked up like that. It’s not right. INT CAR- DAY Lacie drives into the jail entrance. The sound of the indicator is evident whilst she contemplates parking but changes her mind and leaves. EXT SWIMMING POOL- DAY Lacie swims laps of the pool, on each breath she sees a figure watching her. CUT TO: MONTAGE OF SWIMMING UNDERWATER V/O: Glancing light and muffled sounds reduced to silence. The weight of the day subsides to the surface of the water and I am left with the thought of how long I can hold my breath.
- 2. 2. INT UNI- DAY At university, Lacie is made aware of her presentation date. ASHLEY Lacie! LACIE Hey Ashley! ASHLEY You missed out on signing up for presentations next week. It’s worth 25% but it’s not fair how soon.... Voice fades to muffled underwater noises as Lacie begins to zone out. CLOSE UP ON ASHLEY’S MOUTH TALKING WITH NO SOUND. LACIE SNAPS OUT OF HER DAZE. LACIE See you later. *smiles* They go their separate ways. ASHLEY (As Ashley walks away) No worries! They go their separate ways. INT BEDROOM- NIGHT Lacie is studying at night, she hears her mother’s voice calling her name. LACIE? sound of footsteps LACIE Mum.. did you call me? She goes to find her mum but finds her sleeping in her room. The house is quiet. EXT SUPERMARKET- DAY Leaving a supermarket with shopping bags, Lacie bumps into a couple who recognise her. - 3. CONTINUED: 3. KYLE Lacie? hi, I was going to sneak by but I thought if I saw you, you surely saw us! *laughs* you know Tess, right? LACIE Hi, ah yeah I think we have bumped into eachother. TESS *smiles* Hi. KYLE So listen, I heard about your brother.. and I can imagine what you’re going through right now.. LACIE Oh! ..yeah (despondent) KYLE Well, make sure you say hi to your mum for me, last time I saw her she was recovering... Lacie begins to hear voices softly over the top of Kyle’s. KYLE See you! TESS Bye! LACIE Bye.. Lacie’s keys drop out of her hand and as she goes to pick them up, Kyle and Tess walk away, feeling a little mixed up. Lacie stands up and a bunch of teenage girls begin to stare..Lacie feels it’s directed at her, she walks to her car in a paranoid state. INT CAR- DAY As she gets in the car she stares into the rear view mirror, composing herself and puts the radio on. She waits for the voices to fade. EXT OVAL- DAY Lacie lying in the grass. V/O: Tallen’s time could never be given back to him. I wondered what the years put away would do to him.I couldn’t bear the thought of the colour of his (MORE) (CONTINUED)
- 4. CONTINUED: 4. cell or how the outside felt when he was allowed time there. The same sunlight incandescent on the lids of my eyes, was shaded and divergent on his. INT BEDROOM- NIGHT Lacie trying to get off to sleep, she suddenly hears her brother call her name. LACIE Tallen? Lacie shakes her head. She grabs her covers and turns over to cover her body. Hands appear on her shoulder. She thrashes in the opposite direction and when she realises that no one is there, she grabs her mobile phone and sits on her bed. She plays music to calm her. INT UNI- DAY In preparation for her presentation, Lacie sips tea with her notes on her lap. She is nervous and looks around. A single person off in the next room looks directly at her. She spills her tea on her notes. As she jumps up a couple of girls walk past laughing. CLOSE UP ON HER NOTES- THE WORDS SMUDGED. INT LECTURE THEATRE- DAY CLAPPING OF HANDS IN LECTURE THEATRE CLOSE UP OF HANDS Lacie’s name is called. CLOSE UP ON FACES IN THE AUDIENCE CUT TO: LACIE BEGINNING TO SPEAK (Spotlight on Lacie) Hands rise in the audience and questions are thrown at her. All along a cacophony of imaginary voices rise above the sounds of reality. EXT LECTURE THEATRE- DAY The group leaves the lecture theatre and she pushes through, shaken and anxious.
