What are Mozilla Open Badges?
•	Mozilla	Open	Badges	are	not	proprietary	— they	use	free	software	and	an	open	technical
standard. That	means	that	any	organization	can	create,	issue	and	verify	digital
badges,	and	any	user	can	earn,	manage	and	display	these	badges	all	across	the	web.
•	Open	Badges	help	knit	your	skills	together. Badges	can	build	upon	each	other,	joining
together	to	tell	the	full	story	of	your	skills	and	achievement.
•	With	Open	Badges,	every	badge	is	full	of	information. Each	one	has	important	data	built
in	that	links	back	to	the	issuer,	the	criteria	it	was	issued	under	and	evidence	verifying
the	credential	— features	unique	to	Open	Badges.
•	Open	Badges	let	you	take	your	badges	everywhere. Users	now	have	an	easy	and
comprehensive	way	to	collect	their	badges	in	a	single	backpack,	and	display	their
skills	and	achievements	on	social	networking	profiles,	job	sites,	their	websites	and
more.
•	Individuals	can	earn	badges	from	multiple	sources,	both	online	and	offline. Then	manage
and	share	them	using	the	Open	Badges	backpack.

Type	1:	Participation	Badge
These badges recognise participation at an event or activity. You can issue them for all attendees to claim or you can request
people ‘earn’ their badges through integrating them into your activities or adding interactive tasks for earner’s to complete
following your event.
Value	proposition
Why	bother	earning	this	badge?
What	opportunities	does	it	unlock?
Earner: Participate badges capture the learning that happens outside formal
learning environments. These badges help people connect with other earners who
have participated in the same event or activity. This helps build connections and
open opportunities for earner’s to engage further with a community.
Issuer: Participate badges can help consolidate learning. They acknowledge all
participants contribution and help them feel valued through receiving your badge.
Participate badges enable issuers to track participants engagement with an event
or activity. Once the badge has been earned - this provides a great opportunity to
stay connected with your participants.
Skills	and	knowledge
What	skills	does	this	badge	represent?
The skills ‘participate’ badges represent reflect the event or activity the badge has
been earned for. The badge can be designed to include tasks which require
earner’s to consider what they have taken away from their experience. Participate
badges are often used to recognise behavioural attributes that are desirable in
earners, including motivation and commitment, recognised through the successful
completion of an event or activity.
Criteria
What	do	you	need	to	do	to	earn	the	badge?
Does	it	expire?
To earn a participate badge, earners would need to attend and participate in a
specified event or activity. Badges criteria can be based purely on attendance or
designed with interactive tasks. Proactive tasks could include uploading evidence
of participation to help earners capture their experience. Reflective tasks could
help consolidate learning gained through an event or activity.
Behaviours
What	behaviour	does	the	badge	encourage?
A participate badge helps earner’s feel valued through the work they have
completed at an event or during an activity. This positive affirmation helps to build
self-esteem and confidence for earners. A participate badge can help motivate
people to attend events or participate in activities if it is seen to connect to other
opportunities. Through acknowledgement of ‘active’ participation earners are
incentivized to remain motivated and continue to seek new learning and earning
opportunities.
