Utilizing Blogging & Micro-
blogging in foreign language
teaching & learning
C.A.L.L COURSE, IUST ENTRY OF 98
In this presentation, we will be
discussing the potential of using
blogging technology in teaching
foreign languages.
Blogging & Micro-blogging

can both be useful tools in learning language, in
most contexts including our own country.
They can be used:

- by teachers to provide reading practice

- by students to engage in writing practice

They can also be followed up by speaking exercises,

including comprehension.
In early levels (elementary to intermediate):
Teachers can work on reading comprehension & summarizing by
presenting the students with:

- Narratives

- Procedures

- Explanations

And then asking the students to refl ect on what they’ve read, either
in written form outside the class or in oral form during the session.
In more advanced levels (UI and up):
Students can take initiative by producing:

- Diaries

- Line-limited expositions

- Detailed descriptions

in online blogging (or micro-blogging) platforms to share with their peers.

Teachers can subsequently provide feedback on what the students post.
Essentially, it seems fruitful

to start from receptive skills

and move on to productive ones later on,

when it comes to blogging.
The transition can also
help reduce anxiety and
shyness students often
face in sharing ideas.
In conclusion:
Blogging allows for

- free observation & expression of ideas

- widening the range of topics and subjects the students are
familiar with

- the provision of additional linguistic exposure and social
experience the students might otherwise never have.
It can be considered a practical supplementary technique,

which can be used in classes consisting of both introverted and
extroverted students.

However, it’s worth noting that

the topics of discussion or stories

must be chosen according to the age & interests of the participants.
Thank you for your time and attention
