Assessment
LEAST USEFUL
Scholarly communication - nebulous subject
LEAST USEFUL
metadata - i didn't really follow what they were
talking about
2014
MOST USEFUL SESSION
any sessions where there were hands-on activities were good
I personally learned something new from each session and found
them all to be very helpful.
Data Documentation and Metadata. My first time to learn the
Meatdata concept.
LEAST USEFUL
metadata - i didn't really follow what they were talking about
ADDITIONAL SUGGESTIONS
Better to have shorter more intense days. Maybe more days.
Real data sets to work with.
Overall, how likely are you to recommend this training to your
colleagues?
78% likely/very likely
Length of bootcamp (2 full days, optional .5)- 59% too long
2015
Met expectations:
92% agree/strongly agree
MOST USEFUL SESSION
Intellectual property, copyright: The speaker was very thorough and used plain English
rather than "lawyer-speak".
OpenRefine/Data Wrangling
Hearing multiple perspectives from other universities
Methods to scrub messy data with OpenRefine. I had no idea such things were possible
and they will be so useful!
LEAST USEFUL
Scholarly communication - nebulous subject
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS SUGGESTIONS
I felt that many of the topics did not go into depth enough. I would have liked fewer
topics, more in depth.
I would say, keep doing this as it provides a great service to researchers and librarians alike.
The technology needs to be more stable so that all sites see and hear everything at the
same time.
73% said length was just right
Overall, how likely are you to recommend this training to your colleagues?
77% likely

What’s Next?
• Involving more Virginia institutions
• Offer smaller workshops/ sessions throughout
the year
• Larger collaboration (like DM Bootcamp)
every-other year
• Do more non-workshop collaborations

Editor's Notes

  • #4: 4-VA is a statewide initiative dedicated to fostering collaboration among Virginia universities with the goal of improving all Virginians’ access to higher education. Universities are also collaborating to find solutions to commonly held issues in higher education. Our mission is to promote inter-university collaborations that leverage the strengths of each partner university in order to accomplish much more than any individual university could achieve alone.
  • #5: PROJECT ORGANIZING 13 basecamp (web-based) project collaboration 14, 15, 16  goggle docs Twitter handle #vadmbootcamp
  • #6: Content and delivery
  • #7: All Google Docs here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BxJCHgfiRmA5TXhBQ1U1RkgwbzQ?ths=true
  • #8: Change in # days (all Jan) 2016 in March (Spring Break)
  • #9: Lots of team effort and planning – problem when you need to create content and prep for presenting AND organizing all logistics, (rooms, food, registration, marketing) Doesn’t include the time for “planners” who were presenting (double duty)           Planning                Face-to-face meetings (for 14 & 15 meeting)                Meetings (skype) email lists                Survey – Evals Pre-assessments, post-assessments – getting links                Agenda (starting 14, objectives) - google docs           Prep           Debriefings (local and collab) 2013 was all Grad students VT/ UVA site Each site with different cohorts (UVA Grad students only invited) 2014 w/ ODU Librarians sat in - ODU recorded bootcamp 2015 tried to encourage Uva Librarians to attend, but didn’t work too well. Timing for registration – before winter break (for Jan 13, 14, 15) 2013 – Hand written evals 2014, 2015 pre and post assessment online (needed IRB)
  • #10: Hard to satisfy everyone. Each site different focus (Grads or Faculty). Lots of different disciplines. Sites having different “experts” w/ differing abilities. It might be useful to gear it just toward PhD students or students of a particular field. And maybe hold a separate event for MPP and other master's students. We just have different needs when it comes to what we need to know about data. Try to understand the distribution of graduate students, professors, and other employees participating in the bootcamp in order to gauge what is most important to the participants in terms of learning objectives.

  • #12: Like the 2016 2nd day where OpenRefine, R were offered and students could decided which one to pick. Something smaller that doesn’t take too much time to plan OR need lots of folks to support There are lots of materials already available and the live presentations. Stay away from Spring Break dates
  • #13: Bootcamp has helped create a network of Data Librarians in close proximity. Helped those who didn’t have a program, or only had one to support. Leading to Yasmeen & JMU Data Services Coordinator & ODU working to get more Data Management.
