VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL
 It is a technology that enables voice communication and
multimedia sessions over the internet rather than traditional
telephone networks.
 With VoIP, voice signals are converted into digital data packets and
transmitted over the internet infrastructure, allowing for more
efficient and cost-effective communication.

VOIP

 Codecs
 Quality of services
 Protocols
 Hardware and software
 Integration
PACKET SWITCHING
 VoIP employs packet switched networks, where voice data is
broken down into packets, transmitted over the internet and
reassembled at the destination.
 This allows for optimal utilization of network resources.
CODECS
 Codec(Coder-Decoder) algorithms are used to compress and
decompress voice signals into digital format for efficient
transmission.
 Different codecs offer varying levels of compression and quality.
QUALITY OF SERVICES(QoS)
 Ensuring adequate Quality of Services is essential for VOIP to
maintain voice quality.
 Factors such as network bandwidth, latency and packet loss can
impact call quality, so Quality of Services mechanisms prioritize
voice traffic to minimize disruptions.
PROTOCOLS
 VoIP relies on various protocols for signaling, call setup and control.
 Common protocols include SIP(Session Initiation Protocol) for call
setup and signaling, and RTP(Real-time Transport Protocol) for
transmitting voice data.
HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
 VoIP can be implemented using hardware devices such as IP
phones, analog telephone adapters(ATAs) and software-based
solutions like VoIP application on computers and smartphones.
INTEGRATION
 VoIP systems can integrate with other communication technologies
and applications, such as e-mails, instant messaging, and video
conferencing, providing a unified communication experience.
 Benefits of VoIP include cost saving, scalability, flexibility and a wide
range of features such as voicemail, call forwarding, and virtual
phone numbers. It’s widely used in businesses, call centers and
personal communication, revolutionizing the way people connect
globally. However, VoIP also faces challenges such as security
concerns, reliability issues in internet connectivity and regulatory
compliance requirements in some regions.
