The Wardha Scheme of 1937 aimed to reform education in India according to Mahatma Gandhi's principles of basic education. It proposed education for children ages 7-14 that was free and compulsory. Instruction would be in the students' mother tongue. The curriculum would focus on developing students holistically through physical, mental, social, economic, political and spiritual learning. Students would learn practical skills and crafts from their local environment. The scheme was presented at the Wardha Educational Conference in 1937 with the goal of establishing this system of self-sustaining, well-rounded education nationwide.
