What is Watercolor?
How do you use watercolor?
Have you ever used watercolor?
When have you used watercolor?
Do you collect
anything?
During this lesson,
you will create your
own Collectible
Cards
Watercolor Cards
Project
We will be using watercolor paint
and Micron pens to create a
series of 4 collectible cards.
The cards will be linked together
by a common THEME of your
choosing.
You also get to pick what kind of
cards you want to make! The only
requirements are that you use
watercolor and pens, it’s school
appropriate, and there’s a clear
theme linking all 4 cards together.
Watercolor Cards
Project
You will be utilizing the Elements
of Art and the Principles of
Design to create eye-catching
cards that YOU would want to
collect.
Now let’s talk about watercolor…
The Workings, John Lovett
What is
Watercolor?
A translucent art medium made
with pigment suspended in a
water-based binder.
Once you add water, the binder
dissolves and leaves you with
just pigment and water.
Types of Watercolor
Pans:
● Dried “cakes” in individual pans
● Activate with water before use
● Cheaper than tube watercolors
● Best suited for smaller
brushes/paintings
Tubes:
● Wet paint in tubes, similar to
acrylic or oil paints
● Does not need to be activated
● More vibrant than pan
watercolors
● More expensive
Characteristics of
Watercolor
● Transparent
○ Ability to layer colors and
textures
● Loose style
○ Colors can blend and
bleed together
● Soft and light
○ The paper always shows
through the paint, making
every color look very
pastel
Bideford, Frank Webb

Zentangles
A doodle-based
meditation
How to Zentangle
Start with a 3”x3” square
1. Use pencil to make a dot in each
corner
2. Connect each corner to close
the square. You can use straight
or wavy lines
3. Draw a few more lines in pencil
to divide up the square, keep it
loose
4. Using the micron pen, start
doodling. Let your mind wander
and doodle without worry until
the square is full.

What is a Critique
We will go over each project one by one
The artist will have the opportunity to share what your cards represent,
inspiration, themes, or anything else that led to the creation process
Everyone else, talk about what you like, what isn’t working, or what can be
improved.
Keep it positive, and try to speak about each work objectively.
