Being Water Wise
    By Jade Howgate
60% of Perth's water is
                                                     groundwater from
                                                   underground aquifers.
                                                  Superficial aquifers hold
                                                  water quite close to the
surface to supply the roots of
                                                trees and plants with water.
                                              The Leederville aquifer holds
                                               water further down. Beyond
                                              this is the Yarragadee aquifer,
Perth households use an average of 276 although, the water
kilolitres of water a year - double that of corporation is the main user
Melbourne and Brisbane. of this aquifer. This aquifer is
                                                 hundreds of metres below
                                              ground level, and holds more
                                              than 1000 cubic kilometres of

Action Plan!
As a family, we decided that we would aim to reduce our water usage by
at least 10% . I think we can achieve this and follow our action plan .
              We decided our action plan was going to be;
Turn off all taps when they are not in use

                           Have shorter showers

Always use water efficient setting on dishwasher and
                            washing machine.

We decided we wanted to focus on cutting down our water
usage during the evening because this is when we use the
                               most water.

I didn’t have to change my action plan,
although, we had new grass laid mid
way through my water metre readings,
and it had to be watered regularly so
this added to our water usage.
“it was interesting to see how much water we
On average, our family used 9% used and I was surprised at how much we did
less water per day. use! And the action plan was good to do
because then we could see how much we
                                       were saving”
I think our action plan went well, we were just short of our target of saving 10%
each day. We put a timer in the shower and all remembered to turn the taps off.

Although this project is over, I have learnt a lot about how
different people use water, and how some of us may take
our accessibility and standard of water for granted. As a
family we will continue to save water and understand the
                    luxury of clean water.
