WEB ACCESSIBILITY AND USABILITY
WHAT ARE THEY?
 Accessibility refers to a person with a disability’s
ability to see the content/participate in the course

 Usability is the general ability for someone to move
through your course with relative ease, not being
    confused, etc.
WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?
 Accessibility
     Legal
     Ethical

 Usability
     Learning
         Cognitive overload
     Motivation
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO MAKE MY SITE
            ACCESSIBLE?
TEXT FORMATTING
 Text has strong contrast against page
background (i.e. dark text on light
  background).
 Page headings use heading tags(h1, h2,
h3) instead of bolding regular text.
 Hyperlinks clearly identified and labeled (i.e.
links describe where they are going instead
  of saying “click here”).
SOLVING THE “CLICK HERE” PROBLEM…
 Best example: Please review theMSU Professional
    Writing website.

Fair example: Click here to view the MSU
    Professional Writing website.

Worst example: Click here to view the MSU
    Professional Writing website.
IMAGES
 All images contain an Alternate "Alt" tag.
 Graphs, charts, vital visual images are clearly
described in text body or with the use of Long
  Description Tag.
VIDEO/FLASH
 Videos and embedded Flash objects are clearly
  described in page text.
 Video contains closed captions (CC) or a script of
  the narration.
 If either of the above is not possible, other equal but
accessible alternative listed (page in book, other
  resources)
DOCUMENTS
 PDF Files are used when original format is not an
option (i.e. use original files where applicable).
 All PDF files of text are either scanned or converted
form original source so text is able to be copied (i.e.
  text is OCR scanned).
 Files contain a high contrast of text.

 MS Word Files use the proper heading tags rather
than regular text that has been bolded.
