What is Independent Learning?
§ Taking responsibility for your own learning
§ Learning to rely less on your tutors/
lecturers for help and more on yourself
§ Introducing a set of skills to help you
become a pro-active and autonomous
individual

§ Vidcasts: interactive video lectures
Classroom Expectations in the UK
§ Please speak English in class
§ Listen carefully when others speak
§ Ask permission before leaving the room
§ Do not use social media (eg. Facebook or
QQ messenger)
§ Do not make or answer phone calls or text
messages (except in an emergency)
§  Always arrive on time for class
§ You may photograph or record sessions,
but please ask permission first

§ Re-watch the first vidcast.
§ Reflect on your previous educational
experiences. Consider your number of
contact hours per week with teachers,
relationships with teachers and types of
resources used.
Extra Support
•  Extra one-to-one support sessions are
available. Sign up in the LRC on Avenue
Campus
•  Support groups are running on a number of
useful topics. Sign up with me!
•  Conversation cafes are taking place in the
Avenue courtyard at lunchtimes. Just go
along!
