The 14th annual Brazilian Music Institute will be held from May 12-17 at the University of Florida. The weeklong event combines various Brazilian music styles and brings together exceptional artists to facilitate learning and performing for both attendees and guests. This year's guests include flutist, saxophonist, and pífano player Jorge Continentino, acoustic and electric guitarist Ulisses Rocha, drummer Alexander Crook, and UF professors Larry Crook and Welson Tremura. The institute concludes with a concert on May 17 featuring the guest artists and attendees.

For Immediate Release Media Contact: Chip Lowe (352) 213-7650 14th Annual Brazilian Music Institute Returns to UF on Monday, May 12 Bringing Artists Together for a Weeklong Event of Learning and Performing GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 9, 2014 – The University of Florida’s Brazilian Music Institute (BMI) (www.brazilianmusicinstitute.com) returns for its 14th year on Monday, May 12th . The weeklong event combines various music styles, ranging from classical to contemporary. Each year the BMI brings exceptional artists together in an event designed to facilitate the experience of great music and expand the possibilities of participating attendees. “With so many great past Institutes, it is hard to proclaim that this year will be the best,” said Dr. Welson Tremura, Director of the BMI, “but I have a good feeling it is going to be unforgettable of its own accord.” Guests this year include Jorge Continentino (flute, saxophone, pífano), Ulisses Rocha (acoustic and electric guitars), Alexander Crook (drum set) and UF Professors Larry Crook (percussion) and Welson Tremura (voice/guitar). The five-day camp (http://bmicamp.wix.com/bmi-camp) will be held at the Music School, with clinics held in various classrooms and ensemble rehearsal halls. Musicians will practice the guitar, voice lessons, drums and percussion or wind and brass each morning. Group sessions will be held in the afternoons.
- 2. “The BMI gave me the opportunity to meet with amazing artists I would have rarely had access to otherwise,” said Todd Williams, a UF School of Music senior, who practiced percussion at last year’s BMI. “Seeing someone live out their passion, and then have them willing to pass along their knowledge to me was just aweing. It was a great inspiration.” The week will conclude with a concert on Saturday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Squitieri Theatre, located in the West Wing of the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Gainesville.
