Digital Portfolios
What is a digital portfolio? The  digital portfolio uses technology to store  information . Students can add work or photos to their portfolio All information is stored on your computer and can be added to a jump drive for easy access.
Why do we need digital portfolios? Ideal for teachers, financial advisors, artists or anyone who needs to keep records. An easier  and  more efficient way to organize all your files. No more hunting for lost pieces of paper or file folders. Organize student work.

Research on the Digital Portfolio Inter/National Coalition For Electronic Portfolio Research found college students who use E-Portfolios were more engaged and involved in learning activities (Kahn,Sharon,2006 ). The first formal research on the e-portfolios was through teacher  education programs. Most of the undergraduate students liked using the E-Portfolio. Students found it is very easy to use. Development of the E-Portfolio Digital Portfolios were an innovation in the early 1990’s. E-Portfolio’s were first used by artists to store art work. The  first  widespread use of portfolios  was in  teacher  education programs across the country. The e-portfolio was a successful addition to the education program because it was more efficient.
Commercialization Many  companies offers on line portfolios with new organization features. Moodle  (http://moodle.org/) Mahara ( http://mahara.org/ ) PBWorks  ( http://pbworks.com/ ) The Moodle and  Mahara  site are aligned to the state standards.
Students' portfolios can be constructed to reflect whatever is evaluated; or they can be what the students choose to showcase
Technology Adoption S Curve (Trigg,2009)
Innovators and Early Adopters  The innovators are the colleges in their teacher education programs. The early adopters will be the teachers who have used e-portfolio’s previously. It will also be teachers that are comfortable with technology. Strategies to entice them to adopt the innovation would be  and support within the school.
Laggards  The teachers unfamiliar with using  technology may resist. Some of the older teachers who do not like change. The teachers who do not see a value in the innovation. Strategies to entice them to adopt the innovation would be professional development in using e-portfolio’s. Observability seeing others use the innovation. Having a support person  within the school to assist teachers. Trialabilty where they could experiment with the innovation.
Attributes  Observability because once teachers see the ease and advantage of using e-portfolios they will be more willing to adopt. Relative advantage, seeing the success peers are having with the e-portfolio.
Centralized or Decentralized Approach Decentralized approach toward adoption fits best for the e-portfolio. Teachers would make decisions how best to use the e-portfolio. Teachers can experiment with the innovation . E-portfolios fills a need for the user. Diffusion is unexpected.
Change Agents Principal Technology specialist Teachers Develop a need for change by showing another way to contain student work and assess work.
Change Agent cont . Establish an information exchange by building a trusting relationship with the clients. Diagnose any problems clients are having with the innovation. Motivate the teachers to be successful. Intent into action by influencing by working with principal, technology specialist, or peer teachers. Stabilize adoption and prevent discontinuance by reinforcing teachers who have adopted e-portfolios. Achieve a terminal relationship by having the teachers become self –reliance.
Critical Mass E-portfolios have not met critical mass. Introduce e-portfolios to an intact group in the school district who will be more willing to use the innovation. This could be the data specialist or lead teachers in each school. Provide incentives to teachers who have adopted e-portfolios in their classroom, such as stipends.
The Need for E-Portfolios Teachers can use e-portfolios to : Save documentation of what students are learning. Assessment students work.  Track student progress for remediation services. Teachers can use e-portfolios to store documents.
A professional e-portfolio can: Store all your papers are in one spot, no more hunting for a paper. Access the information in the portfolio from any computer. Remind you of all your accomplishments. Store resumes. Store diplomas and awards. Makes you look more professional.
Need cont. Financial e-portfolios Keep tracks of all important papers, such as insurance papers. Store all investment paperwork. Loan information
Need cont.  E-Portfolios are for everyone. Mom can store recipes, pictures, and medical information for the family. More and more colleges are requiring students to maintain an e-portfolio.
Who needs an e-portfolio? Everyone! If you have a file cabinet or a stack of papers you can use an e-portfolio. They are very easy to use, many companies now have e-portfolio programs available on line. They offer tutorials. They even offer free trials. Try One and I know you will never look at another pile of papers on your desk.

  • #2: I’d like to introduce you to file cabinet of the future Digital Portfolios or E-Portfolios.
  • #3: E-Portfolios is a new way to store information. You can store student assessments, student work, track progress. The student can choose work they would like to add to their e-portfolio.
  • #4: Everyone can use an e-portfolio. Teachers, artists, financial advisors. If you own a file cabinet, you could benefit from using an e-portfolio.
  • #5: What can go into the e-portfolio? Assessments, records, college course work, record of all your accomplishments.
  • #6: Teacher Education programs have lead the use of e-portfolios. They proved to be very successful. They provided work samples and progression of learning.
  • #7: E-Portfolios were developed in the early 1990’s. The first people to use e-portfolios widespread was artist. They stored their artwork in the portfolio. The teacher education programs followed and then came financial advisors.
  • #8: Your portfolio can be developed using Moodle, Mahara or PB Works. They will help you organize your portfolio. Moodle and Mahara are aligned to state standards.
  • #9: This is an example of a student portfolios.
  • #10: This S curve shows the seven phases in the adoption process. They are contact , Awareness , Understanding , Trial Use/Training , Adoption , Institutionalization , Internalization
  • #11: The people who be on the forefront of portfolio adoption will be teachers. Many teachers will use these in their education programs. They will be comfortable using the portfolio. People who are comfortable with technology.
  • #12: There will be resistance at first from teachers unfamiliar with technology. Some teachers will not want the change. With support personnel within the school and professional development they too soon will be using e-portfolios.
  • #13: As teachers see other teachers using and adopting the e-portfolios they will become more interested. As their peers become successful using the portfolio more teachers will begin to see the benefit.
  • #14: Teachers will be given the opportunity to experiment with the e-portfolio. This will them a period of time to get comfortable . E-portfolios will fill a need for a better way to store information.
  • #15: Major change agents will be the Principal, technology specialist because they will become the support person, and the teachers, themselves.
  • #16: The change agent will establish a relationship with the teachers, help with problems, motivate teachers, reinforce teachers who have adopted the e-portfolios.
  • #17: We would introduce e-portfolios to an intact group at the school. Maybe the lead teacher on each grade level to promote the e-portfolio. Teachers who establish e-portfolios for their school could be provided with an incentive, such as classroom stipend.
  • #18: E-portfolios are the file cabinet of the future. They have many uses, such as documentation for remediation, Assessments that are drawn, store files.
  • #19: An e-portfolio can store papers in one spot, access information quickly, store your awards ,diplomas.
  • #20: A portfolio can store all finical paperwork, investments, and loan information.
  • #21: Mom also can use a portfolio for the home. She can store medical information, pictures, and recipes. Many colleges are requiring students to maintain a portfolio.
