Central office switches route data between equipment and handle data. Dial-up routers initiate calls outside a local area network by selecting destinations from a preprogrammed table. Telephone companies use computerized switches to route and complete calls between similar switches. Circuit-switched networks also use high-speed intraswitches with fiber-optic links operating at minimum speeds of 45 megabits per second to transfer data.
