- 2. Notes From Mrs. Mizell Dear Parents, On behalf of the teachers and staff of the Central Elementary School (CES), I would like to welcome you back to school. I anticipate that the 15-16 academic year will prove to be an exciting and productive year. To those who are new to Central, we hope that you will quickly feel at home and become involved in the activities of our school through the PTA and your child’s classroom. As I continue as principal at Central Elementary, I will work diligently with parents and faculty to foster an atmosphere that promotes a learning community that is child centered. Working as a team, we will move forward in our mission to create a warm, caring, disciplined, and challenging environment in which all students can learn and reach their highest potential becoming responsible members of society. Although we strongly believe in academic excellence, we also feel that learning must be fun and rewarding for each child. By working together, students, parents/guardians, and staff can make Central Elementary School an exciting and enjoyable place to learn. Central Elementary will be having the annual Report to the Public on September 29th at 5:30 pm in conjunction with Math Night from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Math Night September 29th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm Join us on Tuesday, September 29th for a night of fun with Math! We will be learning HOW our students learn daily, we will have door prizes, and pizza for supper! We hope to see you here!!!

- 11. Welcome to Kindergarten! Starting Wednesday, we will be talking about the eight basic colors! If possible, please dress your child in the specific color that corresponds with that day. It can be a solid color or just a little of the color. If your child does not have clothes to go along with the color of the day that is just fine too! Reading- Reading Growth Spurt Writing- Lessons from the Masters: Growing Narrative Writers Math- Counting, Coins, and Combinations Social Studies- Community Building and Geography: Maps *The book of the month is a suggested book that Second Grade teachers think your family would enjoy reading. This book may or may not have been read in the classroom. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore by William Joyce (Available at Crawford County Library AND Fort Smith Library!)
- 14. Reading: We are launching our new year of reading by learning how to build a reading life. We will continue through this unit during August and September. Please encourage your child to read. Writing: During the first month of school, we will be writing personal narratives (stories from our own lives). You can help your child by talking about important events and people in their life. Math: We will be starting our 1st math unit “Trading Stickers, Combining Coins” and continue through mid- September. This is ALL about place value, addition, and subtraction. Science: We will start out the year by studying the Nature of Science. The students will learn about asking questions and doing experiments. Welcome Back! - 15. Reading: We are “Launching” into ‘Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story.’ We will be in this unit for the rest of August and all of September. We will also be using this time for reading assessments and library procedures Writing: For the months of August and September, we will be crafting Realistic Fiction stories. These are stories that are fictional, but sound as if they really could or did happen. Math: Factors, Multiples, and Arrays are our focus in our first unit!! Please help your child by studying multiplication facts at home!! Social Studies: We will soon be studying Native American Indians: The Iroquios and The Algonquians! - 16. 5th Grade • Science We will start out the year learning all about science process skills and the scientific method, before starting our unit of study over cells. • Math In math we will be studying multiplication and division to start the year! We will also learn about factors and multiples of numbers. • ReadingWorkshop We will be setting goals for our reading lives. Students will be working on reading with greater agency and independence. • WritingWorkshop We will revisit narrative writing. Students will use the skills they have acquired through previous units to write like a pro. • SocialStudies Our first unit of study is going to be over American Revolution. We will also learn about community and team building skills.

- 18. Drop off and Pick up • Bus drop off and pick up will be located behind the building on North 22nd Street. • Car drop off and pick up will now be located in the front of Central Elementary School on North 24th Street.
