The problem ?

* How do you compare complex man made systems ?

* How do you compare solution efficacy ?

* How do you minimise risk, maximise success ?

* Mission critical - lives at risk - we have to move fast!
The key questions ?

       * What is intelligence ?

       * Can it be quantified ?
The answer !
            Ic ~ k log2[1 + KAS ( 1 + PM )]
      S = Sensor, A = Actuator, P = Processor, M = Memory

 Relative Intelligence = Ic
                             Flops (or machine cycles)

Observations:
With zero processor power intelligence is still possible
With zero memory power intelligence is still possible
With zero sensor and/or actuator power intelligence is impossible
Key conclusion:

Intelligence grows logarithmically and not linearly !

The singularity event isn’t going to happen just yet !

The assumption that is is is based on I ~ PM growth looks to be wrong

                                                            Kurzweil et al
Two wisdoms from my past !

“Whilst it is acceptable for the mathematicians,
physicists and theorists to declare that there is no
solution, we in engineering enjoy no such luxury. We
always have to find a solution” !

“Before you even start a problem it is worth thinking
what form the answer might be, and what would be
reasonable”

Because we have to take the wider
view, to be receptive...as we are
 mostly flying blind...

...although there is a growing body
 of fundamental knowledge
 and evidence...

What do we know?

Thinking is an electro-chemical
process...

...influenced by experience and
memory, emotions, external and
internal conditions, plus sensory
system, actions and inaction

Other ‘thinking life forms’ are
considerably simpler!

Without adequate description,
definition, quantification, then
meaningful discussion is very
limited & we soon descend
into the realms of belief and
folk law + superstition...
So far our only successful
route to understanding has
been the application of the
scientific method

A valuable engineering precept: If there is

Approach
I start by doing a Dr Johnson
                                                 and define intelligence!

“And intelligence is the way I
define it and no one else”
Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)

Johnson was an English writer and critic, and
                                                                     My misquote!
one of the most famous literary figures of the
18th century. His best-known work is his
'Dictionary of the English Language
And I don’t mean wordy descriptions of
the form...

      “The faculty of rational behaviour”

“An ability to create order out of chaos”
Also, recognise that we often have difficulty
discerning what is intelligent and what isn’t!

Random scatter Wind action Wind action ? Very unlikely ?
for sure ? or a Intelligent action most likely
                 leaf blower ?
Also, recognise that we often have difficulty
discerning what is intelligent and what isn’t!

Observation: Intelligent intervention can prevent or even
reverse the natural process of entropy within a system.

All natural systems seek to find the lowest energy
state - ie they migrate from order to disorder - the
universe started as a point function and then expanded
Random scatter Wind action Wind action ? Very unlikely ?
for sure ? is the celestial ratchet - it only ever gets
Entropy or a Intelligent action most likely
bigger - and is leaf blower ?
the mechanism by which we die!
This could never occur by random action,
it definitely involves intelligence!
We are actually dealing the transformation of
 information ...
Intelligence can thus be taken (Because I say so!) as
the efficiency and efficacy by which that process is
 completed.
This automatically infers an entropic quality:

Intelligence = Entropy of Input - Entropy of Output
                                   & Efficacy of Course
This would not be a good answer !

Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer,
Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute
and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is
unknown.

                         required to exactly define
                         the state of a system
At a very basic level an intelligent
       system could take the form...

                S P1

Eyes of all kinds often do

And you don’t put all the brains in the

Back to the plot!
This is a tough enough problem for now!

  • 1. What Do Machines Think? Peter Cochrane www.ca-global.org COCHRANE a s s o c i a t e s
  • 2. The problem ? * How do you compare complex man made systems ? * How do you compare solution efficacy ? * How do you minimise risk, maximise success ? * Mission critical - lives at risk - we have to move fast!
  • 3. The key questions ? * What is intelligence ? * Can it be quantified ?
  • 4. The answer ! Ic ~ k log2[1 + KAS ( 1 + PM )] S = Sensor, A = Actuator, P = Processor, M = Memory Relative Intelligence = Ic Flops (or machine cycles) Observations: With zero processor power intelligence is still possible With zero memory power intelligence is still possible With zero sensor and/or actuator power intelligence is impossible
  • 5. Key conclusion: Intelligence grows logarithmically and not linearly ! The singularity event isn’t going to happen just yet ! The assumption that is is is based on I ~ PM growth looks to be wrong Kurzweil et al
  • 6. Two wisdoms from my past ! “Whilst it is acceptable for the mathematicians, physicists and theorists to declare that there is no solution, we in engineering enjoy no such luxury. We always have to find a solution” ! “Before you even start a problem it is worth thinking what form the answer might be, and what would be reasonable”

  • 99. Also, recognise that we often have difficulty discerning what is intelligent and what isn’t! Observation: Intelligent intervention can prevent or even reverse the natural process of entropy within a system. All natural systems seek to find the lowest energy state - ie they migrate from order to disorder - the universe started as a point function and then expanded Random scatter Wind action Wind action ? Very unlikely ? for sure ? is the celestial ratchet - it only ever gets Entropy or a Intelligent action most likely bigger - and is leaf blower ? the mechanism by which we die!
  • 100. This could never occur by random action, it definitely involves intelligence!
  • 101. We are actually dealing the transformation of information ... Intelligence can thus be taken (Because I say so!) as the efficiency and efficacy by which that process is completed. This automatically infers an entropic quality: Intelligence = Entropy of Input - Entropy of Output & Efficacy of Course

It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown.
