There are 4 phases to conducting a needs assessment: 1) planning, 2) collecting data, 3) analyzing the data, and 4) preparing a final report. Task analysis involves determining what learners need to learn through content, subject matter, and learning task analysis. It asks what learners would be doing to demonstrate they met the goal and what prerequisite knowledge is needed. A learner analysis evaluates learners to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and current knowledge to inform instruction. While people have learning style preferences, research does not strongly support tailoring instruction to different styles; the most effective approach is sometimes not a learner's preference.
