Need’s Analysis
 There are 4 phases to a Need’s assessment that a
teacher should go through.
 Phase 1: Planning
 Defining the learner and deciding what type of data to collect
about them.
 Phase 2: Collecting Data
 Collect data from your learners
 Phase 3: Analyzing the Data
 Identification of needs (normative, comparative, felt,
expressed, and anticipated)
 Phase 4: Preparing final report
Task Analysis
 Is the systematic process used by Instructional
Designers to determine what the learner needs to
learn.
 Content analysis
 Subject matter analysis
 Learning task analysis
Dick, Carey and Carey (2009)
 They define task analysis as, “the process of identifying
the skills and knowledge that should be included in
the instruction. This makes me think of the academic
standards we as teachers must meet. They ask two
questions:
 What exactly would learners be doing if they were
demonstrating that they already could perform the goal?
 What are the types of knowledge learners need to know
to meet this goal? (the perquisites).
Learner Analysis
 The idea here is that we as instructors must
understand where are learners are come from and how
they learn. We must know our learners strengths and
weaknesses, therefore we must evaluate them to find
out where they stand on what is about to be taught.
Learning Styles
 We all know about the many different learning styles
but did you know that research does little to support
learning styles. It’s true that people do learn better but
its more of a preference, and sometimes our preferred
way of learning isn’t really the best way we can learn.
Conclusion
 This unit has been very helpful for me because as a
future teacher it is highly important for me to be able
to identify how each of my students learn and
incorporate that into daily lessons. I must also
determine whether or not they already know the
material being covered. Much of this I already knew
but this has helped reinforce what I know.
