What's the problem here

Editor's Notes

  • #4: A vague problem leading to a tentative solution that pleases no-one. That means customer dissatisfaction and rework. No matter how you look at it, we can end up with sub-optimal solutions.
  • #5: This is what we need to do….
  • #6: It’s a suite of tools/approaches that places emphasis on defining the problem first and then building on that. Step-wise and gradual. You can assess as you go.
  • #7: What is the ultimate purpose? What is the business need? Is it a multi-faceted problem with elements worth individual investigation? What’s another way of looking this problem? Complaints that lifts are too slow. Mirrors in the lift lobby. Reduced complaints. Are we addressing the right problem or even the right way? E.g. The car park is too small. Make it bigger. Is this necessarily the problem.
  • #8: Here was the problem we were given
  • #9: Here’s what we got after problem redefinition….. What we wanted to achieve.
  • #10: How we were going to address it…..
  • #11: … and what it had to do And some constraints Low cost Low risk Easy to implement
  • #12: We knew what the problem was…. Let’s thrash out ideas for our problem. What are the concepts that underpin the problem? What are the pluses, minuses and interesting elements that our solution offers? Let’s assess the solutions. How will each stakeholder group view the solution?
  • #13: We came up with 5 ideas to address a defined problem.
  • #15: There is a variety of tools that can be used interchangeably to achieve the same end. It’s whatever suits your strategy and audience. It’s a way to direct the conversation. Use them to structure your interactions with the users to ensure you’re getting the answers you need.
  • #16: Try them out as a solo experiment. Most still work that way. Convince yourself, get confident, then run them in a facilitated group.
  • #17: We used it on a department wide problem (Reward and Recognition), but it can be used at any level because the tools allow us to focus intently on the problem and then develop and assess solutions that satisfy the real problem, not the presumed problem.
  • #18: Better solutions, because the real problem has been identified and agreed, with all aspects considered.
  • #19: What did the team get….. ‘ Shiny Happy People’ - A kick-arse presentation that floored our project sponsor. We weren’t handpicked, just a self-organised team of randoms. Five other groups also delivered excellent solutions. Fluke…I don’t think so.
