Why Most
Surveys Suck –
But Yours Don’t
Have To: Part II by Lauren Franco
Breaking down “Why Most
Surveys Suck – But Yours
Don’t Have To”, today’s focus
is on…
TRUST DEFICIT
Trust deficits take a variety of
forms – and arise for a range
of reasons, like:
• apathy
• cynicism
• past negative experiences
• survey fatigue
Every survey is chance to build
trust – or lose it.
A good survey is a dialogue,
and anticipating participant
concerns helps you respond
appropriately and manage
expectations.
Each question counts…
Weak survey question:
• “Do you support continuing
Program X?”
Responses from stakeholders
whose perception is already
skewed:
• “They’ll discontinue
Program X if a majority
votes against it.”
• “They never listen to what
we say in those surveys.”
Anticipate concerns, build
trust, and ask instead:
“Program X was funded by a
grant that runs out next year.
The program can continue
only if we can find additional
funds, which we are actively
seeking. Please rate the
effectiveness of Program X in
the following areas…”
The first steps in making a survey
successful begin with the end.
Define the goal and then focus on
building trust throughout the
whole process.
Engaged, trusting participants
respond with thoughtful,
honest answers, giving you
better response rates and
actionable data.
Keep it up!
