Composition II
 Contractions are never used in professional writing
 Example: don’t  do not
 Incorrect: Doctors don’t know what causes canker
sores.
 Correct: Doctors do not know what causes canker

Sentence Mechanics Tip #1
Take out a pencil and paper and respond to the following prompt:
Hypothetical:
You purchase a bag of potato chips from the store. When you
get home and reach in for a handful of the snack, you cut your
hand on a razor blade inside the bag. The cut is so deep you
have to go to the Emergency Room for stitches.
You try to contact the potato chip company to complain but
they only have an online complaint forum. You can enter up to
8 sentences in the online mailbox. What do you write?
Writing Exercise
 Why are some students intimidated by formal
writing?
 Is there any difference between writing for class and
writing for your career?
 What type of writing will you be doing within your
career field?
Questions to Consider:
 Your instructor will assign you a career. Consider this
career and discuss how writing might be a part of this job.
What do they write? Who do they write to? How can
experience in professional writing benefit a person in this
career?
 There may be several answers to these questions. Think of
as many as you can.
 Write down your answers on one piece of paper.
Break into Groups
 Being able to write professionally is a powerful
thing
◦ Build great resumes
◦ Write articles about your community
◦ Write complaints
◦ Petition for change
◦ Communicate with others without causing animosity
Writing as a tool
 Being able to articulate your thoughts through
writing can influence and inspire others.
◦ You can convey humanity
◦ Sympathize or empathize
◦ Influence someone to buy or try your product
◦ Create something new
◦ Instigate change
Writing as an art
