Mathematics eCharter for Blog and Wiki Use It is a privilege to communicate with other young people at school. The internet is a great opportunity brought about by your laptop usage at St Mary’s. All student’s need to be mindful of the contribution your e-learning can make towards establishing good relationships with your peers at school. 05/27/09
As with any communication, when communicating via your computer, remember the person who reads your information and be sensitive to the feelings of others. 05/27/09
For using wikis and blogs for Mathematics the following guidelines are provided and it is a requirement of all students that these are followed: Answer your blog questions politely Be careful of what you say about others. Blog entries and contributions to wikis are also visible to others. While a wiki version may be updated by an edit, your teacher, and your peers will still able to view previous versions in the history of the wiki and will know the name of the person who has made the post/edit. 05/27/09
All blogs and wikis are used under teacher supervision As with all group work, take care when discussing a particular version of a wiki, be forgiving of other people’s mistakes (eg., spelling). A good rule of thumb is not to say anything that you would not be prepared to say to the person to whom the contribution belongs; be tactful eg., I think I’ll edit that version with…. 05/27/09
2. Don’t assume your online communications/publishings are private nor that they can be read by only yourself or the recipient. Never send something that you would mind your parent, teacher or fellow student seeing. In respecting copyright you must cite all quotes and sources Sometimes it is easier to recognise the site by creating a direct link to the site If you see something Inappropriate on a wiki or a blog notify your teacher 05/27/09
3. Remember, that you do not have the right to be rude or to be nasty to others. Don't write anything that YOU wouldn't want to read, or that would hurt someone’s feelings. 05/27/09
4. Don't use inappropriate, unacceptable or offensive language. If you wouldn't say it to your teacher, parents or grandparents, then don't say it on-line! 05/27/09
5. If your teacher asks you to contribute to a public wiki or blog: you are obviously not permitted to add ‘upgrades’ or other facilities that are offered on public websites such as edublog and pbwiki. 05/27/09
Collaborative Learning Students will be working in groups Students have been given a number of links to assist As working through the topic, students will complete a booklet and will then self mark their exercises A second booklet has been produced for students to monitor their progress – teachers will mark sections as complete A Blog has been set up for students to have conversations with one another 05/27/09
Maths Forum A Maths Forum has been set up for students ie Maths Help-line Students from selected classes will be involved in responding to questions – they will form a ‘Maths Club’ (the ‘Mathletics’?) 05/27/09
Shapes How do we categorise and name shapes? What do we need to know about a shape so that we can label it? What instruments do we use to investigate shapes and how do they work? What mathematical language do we use to describe shapes? Where and how are shapes used in art, our built environment, nature, commerce (including advertising) 05/27/09
Shapes Are all around us: How and why are they useful? Which shapes and patterns appeal to us aesthetically and why? 05/27/09
Activities For Shapes Explain the process of naming a 2D shape. Draw yourself as a combination of polygons. This can be a sci-fi, fantasy etc idea. Write a story showing what the world would be like if right angles were banned. Find some examples of patterns, using at least one of the forms of symmetry, from another culture which appeal to you. Write a few sentences about each pattern saying where it comes from and what you like about it. 05/27/09
